It’s been a while since we sat down with Touria to discuss all things art fair. The inspiring founder of 1-54 Art Fair, with now three editions around the globe (London, New York and Marrakech) reflects on over a decade of 1-54.
Kindly remind us, how did it all start?
My journey to founding 1-54 was deeply influenced by growing up surrounded by art. My father, Hassan El Glaoui, was one of Morocco’s pioneering modernist painters, and his studio was always alive with creativity. His career and passion for art inspired me to pursue a path that would amplify artists’ voices, particularly from the African continent and its diaspora. I saw a gap in the representation of these voices on a global stage and felt a responsibility to address it.
What’s your favourite work by your father Hassan el Glaoui?
My favorite painting is a portrait of my sister and me as little girls, sitting in my father’s studio. I’m sure it must have been incredibly difficult for us to sit still, which makes me appreciate this artwork—and my father’s talent and patience—even more.
What is the one question you wish you get asked and never do?
I wish people would ask about the artists and stories that have moved me the most during the journey of building 1-54. There’s so much that inspires me daily—untold narratives, unexpected connections, and the sheer resilience of the artists I’ve had the privilege to work with.
Was there a moment in these years when you wanted to quit and what made you go on?
Of course—building something as ambitious as 1-54 hasn’t been without its challenges. Early on, there were moments when the hurdles felt insurmountable—whether it was funding, logistics, or skepticism. What kept me going was the artists. Their trust in 1-54 and their belief in its vision reminded me why I started in the first place.
Marrakech, you said in other interviews, is your most important fair in terms of returning to the African continent and building from there. Tell us a bit more what’s going to happen in this upcoming edition?
Marrakech is always special. It’s not just about returning to the African continent—it’s about celebrating its creative heartbeat. This upcoming edition will feature an exciting mix of galleries and artists, many of whom are showcasing works that reflect the contemporary realities and histories of the continent. Beyond the exhibitions, there’s a strong focus on programming—panel discussions, performances, and collaborations with local institutions—to create a holistic cultural experience.
Now a good decade in, how do you feel (1-54 was launched 2013 in London) about the inclusion of the African continents artistic output in the western markets/ institutions/ canon?
There’s definitely been progress. African artists are now receiving much-deserved recognition in global conversations about art, with greater appreciation for the depth and diversity of their work. Western markets and institutions are increasingly embracing the richness of artistic production from the continent. However, there’s still more to achieve—particularly in creating sustained engagement and meaningful platforms that allow these voices to flourish over time.
What are your favourite examples of this visibility shift changing ?
The rise of African artists being featured in major biennales, museum acquisitions, and international collections is one great example. The rise of platforms like Zeitz MOCAA in South Africa and the inclusion of African artists in exhibitions like the Venice Biennale are milestones. It’s also exciting to see private collectors and institutions in Africa and its diaspora stepping up to champion these voices.
Tip to your younger self?
Be bold in pursuing your passions. Starting something new is always daunting, but the moments of doubt will lead to some of your greatest achievements. And remember to build relationships as they are just as important as building projects.
