These Ladies Are Pushing the Boundaries of Figurative Art
From the well-known to the super-emerging.
Art Girls Jungle 11 Apr 2019

After falling out of vogue for nearly a century, figurative art is back. Interested in innovation and pushing boundaries, modern art veered away from traditional styles and media—and it doesn’t get more traditional than figurative drawing and painting. But contemporary art has re-embraced figuration, adding a distinctive twist.
That is to say, these aren’t your Russian grandma’s flower and duck still life paintings, although those are lovely too. Throughout most of art history, painting and drawing has been concerned with realism: translating scenes and objects on to the canvas as closely to how they appear IRL as possible. But after the advent of photography, most art movements have veered away from this literal type of realism, instead aiming to convey a feeling or idea through use of color and form.
Contemporary figurative art proceeds in this spirit. Artists often flatten or distort their subject to achieve their desired effect. Colors convey emotion more than appearance. And in the world of drawing, the obsession with anatomical correctness has died down in favor of more expressionistic styles.
But don’t just take our word for it. Below, here are 10 figurative artists, who just so happen to be women, that you should definitely be following. From the well-known to the super-emerging, these ladies are pushing the boundaries of contemporary figuration.
