August 6 isn’t just any big day; it’s a special big day. It’s Andy Warhol’s birthday! The occasion clearly calls for Andy Warhol birthday presents for all your arty friends.
Born in 1928, Warhol would be 91 this year. It also happens to be my parent’s 25th anniversary (shoutout to Roman and Larisa), but when I told them about this fabulous synchronicity, my mom didn’t know who Andy Warhol is.
I take it I’m speaking to a slightly more informed audience here. When we talk about Andy Warhol, we’re arguably talking about the root cause (or the psychic prophet) of the art world as we know it: glitz and glamor, fame and fortune, jets and journalists angling to get in on the fun (guilty!).
The man also had some great quotes. More than just capturing his time, he captured ours. Spoken half a century ago, his words ring even truer today. A highly ambivalent figure, he foretold the post-modern mood of absurdity and ennui that radiates from every Internet meme today. “Being born is like being kidnapped. And then sold into slavery.” If that’s not a line from @textsfromyourexistentialist, then I’m a Superstar.
I especially love his line on work: “I suppose I have a really loose interpretation of ‘work’, because I think that just being alive is so much work at something you don’t always want to do.” Couldn’t agree more. Can I put that in my email signature?
