5 Fresh Art Accounts to Cure Art World Anxiety
Art world treasures that'll provide moral support when you need it most
Insta-Gorgeous 12 Jun 2019

Happy Basel week! Whether your a gallerist, a collector, an advisor or anything in between, you’re probably heading into your biggest (read: most stressful) week of the year. Between desperate buyers and savage sales people trying to meet their quotas, tensions will be running high.
The key to keeping your sanity this week is to not get trapped in the Basel bubble. Far, far away from this jungle of well-preserved Swiss ladies and overpriced asparagus, there’s a whole world running as usual. Believe it or not, there are people in that world that haven’t even heard of Basel. Maybe they think Basel is what you put in a tomato and mozzarella panini. Maybe they think it’s a fancy type of vase.
But we lucky (or unlucky, depending on how you look at it) people know the truth, which means we have to live with it. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you figure out how. Basically, all you have to remember is this: no matter what happens this week, the (art) world will go on.
In this trying time, it might help to remember what got you excited about the art world in the first place. Next time you’re trapped at a dinner table with a collector who’s got a royal title and basically drooling at the mouth for an artwork that you’ve been instructed not to sell them under any circumstances, try to visualize the first piece of art that you really fell in love with. Really picture it clearly; let the details sharpen in your mind’s eye. Then smile, look your poor would-be client in the eye, and deliver the fatal line: I’m so sorry, this artist is only selling to institutions right now.
In case that’s not enough, we’re bringing you a fresh installment of art world treasures that’ll provide moral support when you need it most. Browse these under-the-radar art accounts when you need to reignite your faith in humanity, or just in the art world.

1) For when you need a little comic relief: @artreviewpower100
art review power 100
No, not that Art Review Power 100.
You all know @jerrygogosian by now, but here’s a fresh new art meme account that I guarantee you’re not following. But, seeing as Jerry Saltz does, soon everyone will be. @artreviewpower100 is the gay art world meme page you didn’t know you needed in your life. Best of all, they’re true meme purists and still use the white with black outlines Impact font. PS: need more gay art content in your life? Follow @theartofgrindr. And don’t forget to submit your own screenshots from your Basel sexcapades. That’s right, a bonus account, just for you.

2) For when you need a little artspo: Jennifer Higgie, @jenniferhiggie
pelton messenger
Agnes Pelton, Messenger (1932).
Writer and editor of Frieze Magazine, Jennifer Higgie isn’t exactly an obscure figure in the art world. But if you aren’t following her IG account, you really should be. Higgie posts almost daily spotlights of overlooked women artists, from historical to contemporary. Next time you’re about to scream in the middle of Basel from how patriarchal the art world *still* is, scroll through her excellently curated account to remember all the outstanding ladies who are starting to get their due.

3) For when you need a little house porn: @larrys_list

Need a little house porn to get you through the week but can’t exactly dip out to watch House Hunters International? We’ve got you. @larrys_list posts stunning shots of the stunning art in all the world’s big-shot art collectors homes. Whether you need something to aspire to to meet your sales targets or just need a reminder that not all your precious sold works will end up in some Saudi storage unit, this page has got your back.

4) For when you need a reminder that art exists outside of Basel: @fountart

Basel got you sick and tired of the “traditional gallery structure”? Here’s an artist-first online art and textiles collective that’s trying to disrupt the gallery system. Their mission: to create intimate connections between artist and collector, and to blend great art and great design to provide a bomb new art experience for you, the “new age art enthusiast.” Their IG regularly spotlights fresh, under-the-radar artists and designers that you’re about to fall in love with.

5) For when you just need a soothing scroll sesh: @culturerow
