Art Girls Jungle 15 Sep 2016

From singers to actors, a multitude of Hollywood celebrities try to reach “Art Stardom” by trying their hand at making a decent piece of art. In most cases, it seems to work, but for others, they should probably put the paintbrush down. Being an artist is a tough job. Sure it may have its perks, but to produce a thoughtful conceptual idea into a concrete and beautiful piece, takes skill and effort. Which leads us to the ultimate philosophical debate of whether you are born an artist or taught? We look at 7 celebrities and their artworks to explore whether their work deserve a round of applause or tomatoes!
1.  Miley Cyrus

The tongue sticking and ‘twerking’ singer surprisingly launched her career as a visual artist, after she revealed her sculptural works “Dirty Hippie” during Art Basel Miami in 2015. Her colourful and erotic sculptures, although eye-catching created with vibrators, marijuana joints, party hats and a bunch of glitter, did not seem to please the art crowd.

 James Franco

The art world is having a hard time taking Hollywood actor, James Franco seriously. Labelled as “The Disaster Artist”, he is known for taking a stab at recreating Cindy Sherman’s famous “Untitled Film” series, which, let’s just say, did not work out.

3.
 Lucy Liu

Our Charlie’s Angels Lucy Liu, when she is not kicking ass on screen, the actress also paints and sculpts – and surprisingly well for that matter. Last year, Liu unveiled decades worth of art in an exhibition in New York, displaying beautiful abstract paintings. Her inspiration range from 9/11 to modern-day slang, producing interesting stitched up works and other mixed media pieces.

 Jim Carrey

When the comedian is not making us laugh, Carrey paints and draws in his free time, and has been since he is was a child. He often goes to his art cabin in Canada, which is filled with portraits of women, self-portraits and images of pop culture, according to Artnet. Another surprising addition to the list of actor-turned artist.

5.  Pierce Brosnan

Our former 007 British spy also has a creative side. We all know him as an art lover and collector, but the Irish actor is also a trained commercial artist.

He paints lively figurative and landscape portraits, which he has done for many years – and we must say this James Bond has many hidden talents.

6.  Shia LaBeouf

The TV and movie star actor is a recently turned performance artist, who made the headlines last year with shocking performances as he aspires to reach art world recognition. One of his most memorable (and bizarre) bits include running around Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum for art, participating in a performance mocking himself and of course, his #IAMSORRY performance in which the actor was allegedly raped.

7.  Chris Brown

The American pop-singer and dancer appears to have a great love for art as well, frequently unveiling his paintings and sketches on Instagram. In the art world, he is known under the name Konfused and collaborated with street artist KAI. According to various sources, his works found eager buyers last year during Fine Art Auctions Miami (FAAM), selling for $15,000 to $25,000!
