As if one new museum in Marrakech wasn’t enough (the famed Yves Saint Laurent Museum opened last February), now, North Africa’s artiest city is at it again with the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden. The newly-opened museum opens their next exhibition February 27, which highlights African contemporary art from Morocco and beyond. Africa Is No Island features 40 photographers who in and around Morocco, including portraits of elderly women by Côte d’Ivoire photographer Joana Choumali, lush landscapes by French photographer Edgar Marsy and works by African American artist Ayana Jackson, whose series Black Madonna Tabloids looks at the narratives around celebrities, race and the media. It’s worth the trip to check out the gorgeous premises, it’s just another reason to escape the winter blahs for sunny Morocco.
See life through the African lens at Morocco’s newest museum.
