Inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier’s ‘free the nipple’ shirt at Paris Fashion Week’s couture week earlier this month, it got us thinking – what about the long history of art world moments on the runway? From Karl Lagerfeld to Keith Haring and many more, here are some of the best art world moments on the runway ever.
Coach X Keith Haring
The brand put the famed 1980s street artist on many products – including their bags. It includes a special-edition collection combining Haring’s iconic cartoonish illustrations with Coach’s “all-American attitude.” The bags are a celebration of two legacies, both inspired by the spirit and optimism of New York City.
Adam Selman X Georgia O’Keefe
In spirit of Georgia O’Keefe’s recent retrospective on at the Brooklyn Museum, Adam Selman put the artist’s flowers onto his garments for New York Fashion Week last year – celebrating a feminist icon who was way ahead of her time in art (and now fashion).
Modern Art History X Chanel
At Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2014 Paris ready-to-wear show, the runway was decked out as a contemporary art gallery filled with contemporary art installations – Artists referenced included Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, Claes Oldenburg and Marcel Duchamp – featuring the luxury brand’s products and logo. “I wanted a certain likeness between what is considered art and what is considered fashion but without the pretentious approach of it,” said Karl Lagerfeld.
Philip Colbert X Andy Warhol
Who can forget when Philip Colbert took Warhol’s soup cans, Salvador Dali’s lobster phone and Duchamp’s R. Mutt urinal and put them onto dresses?
Iceberg X Roy Lichtenstein
Probably the best of all is the comic artworks of Roy Lichtenstein which graced the garments of Iceberg (and Lisa Perry) collections, which leave us wanting more.
