The best pop-up museums for self-indulgent art selfies
Let’s face it: art museums are not what they used to be.
News 14 May 2018
Let’s face it: art museums are not what they used to be. While they were once places for the old establishment to show landscape paintings in gold-gilded frames, it seems things have taken a turn for the smartphone camera, as all of the new pop-up museums are made for selfies. Here are some of the best ones to see and get your snap on at, catch them while they last.

Ice Cream Museum
Let’s begin with the master of it all, the Museum of Ice Cream. In what began as a side project in 2016, has turned into an entire movement of pop-up museums made for the selfie. This one began in New York and has since traveled to L.A. and Miami, and next up is San Francisco and more cities to be announced.

Egg House
This New York-based funhouse has over five rooms that deals not with dairy, but an egg character who leads us through their life, from carton to bedroom and even an egg pool with palm trees. All are perfect for selfies, of course, and are lit from bright to low-light, for those looking for a more flattering selfie.

Color Factory
The Color Factory in San Francisco is a rainbow-like dream with a confetti room, pink walls and Daniel Buren-esque transparent windows that cast colors into an empty room. Outside, all the colors of the rainbow are painted onto the building, so you can’t miss it. It’s no wonder that they have a following of over 100k on Instagram.

Dream Machine
The Dream Machine is another example, which runs in Brooklyn until May 31, and has fluorescent-lit hallways, falling fake snow a “hidden galaxy” room with mirrors, which looks a lot like an artwork by Yayoi Kusama. They also have a black-lit laundromat, which is perfect.

Museum of Selfies
The Museum of Selfies is the first museum to call it out, though, this Glendale, California, museum also looks at the  history and cultural impact of the selfie, which dates back 40,000 years. Jump in a selfie car, walk into a selfie bathroom set and sit on a selfie throne, modeled after the famed seat in Game of Thrones. Or, just take no photos at all.
