The art world is beyond fun to make fun of. And nobody has done it better thanSaturday Night Live.
Some of the best SNL skits about the art world include the famed ‘The Art Collectors’ skit series, where – presumably Swiss – art collectors Nuni and Nuni Shoener (played by Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph) have German accents and live in a strange, space age-like home.
From 2005, the series is not about art jargon, it shows the art dealers dressed in snowsuits with eclectic home decor that includes Mark Rothko paintings and Charles and Ray Eames chairs. They eat capsules made of meat, shaped like giant pills and their weird assistant who says Dada-like poetry, like “next year, I’m going to buy a goldfish.”
It was at a time when the art world had Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons in the forefront of mainstream culture. But even before, Mike Myers did his iconic Berlin art-scene character Dieter, who loved artworks like “Scabs on Canvas” and the Wall of Unhappiness.
