You may have not heard of Deborah Roberts, until now. The Austin artist, who recently showed at the Studio Museum in Harlem, creates collages that show strong black women–and was recently collected by Beyonce Knowles. With titles of works like “Bare feet girls grow up mean,” she recently told VICE her work is about vulnerability. “We start off as black girls, and we soon become black American women. So what does that trail look like? How do we begin? How has our beauty been imagined? Those are the questions we should be asking ourselves.” Check out her work at the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art until May 19.
