Fatboy Slim Praises Smiles, But Isn’t A Fan Of Emojis
Art Stuff 09 Jul 2019

Fatboy Slim is famous for such bangers as Praise You, The Rockafeller Skank and Right Here, Right Now. But did you know he is also known for being a big fan of yellow smiley faces? And no, these aren’t what you use to Whatsapp your friends, he hates emojis, Slim’s smiles are vintage, the ones you found on stickers before technology took over the world.

Slim – real name Norman Cook – is a big fan of all things yellow and happy. Over the years he has amassed a collection of objects covered in them, which is now at the centre of an exhibition called Smile High Club at Underdogs Gallery in Lisbon.

The objects – which appear on everything from clothing items to kitchen appliances – pay tribute to Harvey Ball, who is credited for creating the logo in 1963, coincidentally the same year Slim was born. (It seems he was destined to be obsessed from birth)

As well as displaying Slim’s enormous smiley collection, the exhibition will include artworks by street artists, and designers, with everything being for sale – apart from Slim’s beloved collection of smiles, of course.
Smile High Club is on display at Underdogs Gallery, Lisbon until 21 July 2019
