In a new exhibition called MADE IN THE DARK at Stems in Brussels, Coady Brown exhibits new paintings that convey nuanced and poetic emotional states representative of our embodied internal landscape.
Brown’s figurative works explore the vulnerability of our connections and relationships, as her figures reflect our environments, mirroring the heightened, surreal, frenetic, sexy and sorrowful states that we encounter in our daily lives.
Brown’s subjects are androgynous, a reflection of the fact that the artist understands that femininity and gender fluidity can be a site of both strength and extreme vulnerability. Caught in various states of harmony, anxiety, ecstasy and aguish, her figures navigate the uncertainty and paranoia of everyday contemporary life. After a year in which we’ve all confronted a new world, trapped in perpetual lockdowns, her images could not be more timely.
Coady Brown: MADE IN THE DARK is on view at Stems in Brussels through May 22
