Dapper Dan Winning a Fashion Award Is the Most Epic Thing Ever

The Harlem streetwear designer turned retro icon never expected this.
Probably because he never set out to fit into the fashion world and now, the iconic fashion designer – who defined 1980s hip hop – has the fashion world coming to him (and it’s not just because he is friends with A$AP Rocky).

Dapper Dan just won the Harlem’s Fashion Row Lifetime Maverick Award in New York City. As he told Page Six: “It’s something I never expected, and that’s pretty obvious by the fact I never tried to penetrate the fashion industry,” he said.
“I had absolutely no connection to the structure of fashion, so it was something that I never expected. But . . . I feel great about it now — more so for what it does to people of color, for people behind me.”
