Events Too Cool to Miss during Hong Kong Art Week
The Ultimate Art Basel Hong Kong Cheat Sheet
Art Stuff 22 Mar 2018

Hong Kong has gained its valuable share over the global art scene, and March is its gorgeous show time! Around the unmissable Art Basel Hong Kong, there are much more to expect: from the first-ever harbour front sculpture park to all the international artist heavyweights around various blue-chip galleries.

For a stroll, commuting between Art Basel & Art Central…

Harbour_theartgorgeous

The Harbour Arts Sculpture Park 2018 is a museum without walls, which features sculptures by emerging and renowned local and international artists, free to the public. Curated by Tim Marlow (Artistic Director at the Royal Academy of Arts) and Fumio Nanjo (Director of Mori Art Museum and Director of International Programme at Hong Kong Art School), get your phones ready for some selfies with a Yayoi Kusama pumpkin or works by Tracey Emin or Antony Gormley, with the captivating Hong Kong skyline as backdrop.

The transformative installation Spiral Scratch by Scottish Pop artist and 2005 Turner Prize nominee Jim Lambie will bring another sensory dimension to the shopping mall Pacific Place, as part of the Swire Properties Arts Month. Why can’t be missed? It is the first time his work will be seen in Asia at this scale!

Heavyweights around the town

hk-artKAWS, Untitled, 2017; George Condo, Laughing and Screaming, 2017; Wolfgang Tillmans.

Hong Kong is quite a crowded city, but is definitely never too crowded to take in more international big names showcasing their works at the leading gallery players.

Here is a sneak peak of who will be in town (yes, you can be jealous)
KAWS @Perrotin (yes, sorry but that’s our absolute favourite – not only because he did design the new print magazine issue’s stickers!)
George Condo: Expanded Portrait Compositions @Maritime Museum
Jeff Koons @David Zwirner booth, Art Basel Hong Kong
Ai Weiwei @Tang Contemporary Art
Yoshitomo Nara @PACE Gallery
Wolfgang Tillmans @David Zwirner Gallery
Mark Bradford @Hauser & Wirth
Face-Off: Picasso/Condo @Sotheby’s Hong Kong Gallery
OSGEMEOS @Lehmann Maupin

Work Hard, Play Hard(er)

To list all the happenings in town, unfortunately is almost impossible, but try to get on the list for:
Phillips “Housewarming Party” to celebrate their mind-blowing new space in Central
Korakrit Arunanondchai’s Ghost:2561 Triennale Pre-launch Party
Hublot x Tatler x TheArtling x Sang Bleu (the coolest tattoo artist on the planet, fingers crossed)
MCM x Korean art world super star Eddie Kang celebrate their new capsule at Entertainment Building
Royal Academy x FT x Swire x Victoria Miro x Art Partner “The Artist’s Party”

Get smart
There are lots of talks & panels, too. But highlights for sure include:
Asia Art Archive in conversation with the Guerilla Girls for a healthy dose of girls power
Swire Art’s Programme at their stunning lounge at Art Basel: Personally we can’t wait for their talk with art-world darling Michael Xufu Huang as well as the graffiti panel, but see the full list here.
A series of private panel discussions at the occasion of the exhibition “Christopher Wool: Highlights from the Hill Art Collection”: our favourite – “The Art of Collecting” with SFMOMA Neal Benezra, among others.

Furry Cover Boy

COVER_TAG_low-res
The week wouldn’t be complete without grabbing the newest issue of our print magazine: you can’t miss it with furry Bertie (Working for The Hole Gallery, NYC) as cover boy and limited edition stickers by KAWS (yes, you got us) inside (fingers-crossed, no one snatched out the stickers before you).
