Berlin art week kicked off its seventh edition this past weekend and every year, the annual event keeps getting bigger. Here is a quick guide to keep you up to date and let you know what you missed. Here is a quick catch up.
In Mitte, the new Palais Populaire museum opened with a “Works on Paper” exhibit featuring drawings by Wangechi Mutu, Kara Walker and Sigmar Polke. The museum is inside of the former Prinzessin Palais on Unter den Linden and the exhibition space is designed with minimal concrete architecture inside an 18th century palace. Worth the trip beyond Museum Island.
The renowned nightclub and bar owner Rebecca Brodsky, who brought us LARRY Club is at it again with the new Barry Bar, which is surely going to become an art scene hangout pretty soon.
The artBerlin art fair did shake down in the old Tempelhof airport after spending many years over near Gleisdreick, and this had a profound effect on the amount of space there was to show the artwork – some sculptures were outdoors, too, by the vintage airplanes, backing onto the runway. The top highlight was the Wim Wenders photographs at the Spreuth Magers booth.
The famed German photographer shows his latest portraits from his Close Up series, which are on view until November 17 at CWC Gallery in Mitte. His approach is the same for every celebrity, close up and without touch-ups. There are dozens of celebrities to be found in this exhibit, from Cate Blanchett to Cher and Dolly Parton.
The Weinmeister Hotel in Mitte is your best bet for a comfy stay in Berlin. With arty interiors, you’ll find the works of local artists on the walls here, while the rooms are each designed to look sleek and stylish (each bed also has a black light above).
