Macao’s Cotai district has a new spectacle: MGM COTAI, a brand new opened hotel complex with not only the Peruvian – Japanese restaurant, Aji – run by Peru’s star Chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, numerous carefully selected retail and dining outlets, a state of the art spa (have you ever tried a Himalayan healing ritual?) and a magical pool – but also art; lots of art.
Featuring over 300 captivating and thought-provoking works seamlessly integrated with its public spaces. The MGM COTAI Art Collection spans from antique imperial carpets dating from the Qing Dynasty, modern and contemporary Asian paintings and sculptures by renowned artists, freshly-commissioned works by local and regional rising talents, large-scale interactive installations to an exclusive array of digital art collected from around the globe. Connecting East with West and blending tradition with innovation, the MGM COTAI Art Collection is part of MGM’s goal to bring world cultures together through innovative artworks.

Last weekend, MGM, a leader in artistry and entertainment as well as a proud sponsor of Art Basel, hosted an art tour and symposium on redefining public art to further its mission of making art more accessible to the public and enhance community awareness on art and culture through MGM COTAI’s spectacular art program.

The “Explore Spectacular” journey began with an art tour of the imperial carpets (Italian collector and expert Mr. Roberto Danon gave us an insight into the delicate pieces), The Chairman’s Collection and digital art collection of the newly opened MGM COTAI. It was then followed by a Meet-the-Artists session, moderated by Royal Academy’s Tim Marlow, in which the participants had an up-close encounter with the contributing artists of the MGM COTAI Art Collection, including Hsiao Chin, Xue Song, Gao XiaoWu, Lin Guocheng, Chloe Ho, Hong Wei or Wang Kaifang.

The collection, named the Chairman’s Collection – is curated by Pansy Ho and assigned curator Calvin Hui and provides an incredible visual complement, reflecting MGM’s commitment to entertainment, creativity and style.
According to Calvin Hui, the handpicked works all can be grouped under the concept of a new oriental aesthetic, “A World Linked Through Art”, bringing the world to China and China to the world.
The journey concluded with an art symposium on redefining public art with welcome remarks delivered by Ms. Pansy Ho, Co-Chairperson & Executive Director of MGM China Holdings Limited.

As a continuation of MGM COTAI’s opening celebration, Ms. Pansy Ho hosted a marvellous dinner and party celebration at the MGM Theater at COTAI. Over 600 guests including A-listers, celebrities, top regional socialites and fashion icons joined the spectacular evening that showcased the engineering and architectural dexterity of the MGM Theater, with transformations into a banquet venue, a concert hall and a DJ nightclub.
