Meet Our January Art Sheroes
From Space Drawings to Matisse's Great Granddaughter
Art Stuff 17 Jan 2020

Happy New Year Art Squad!

We’re back with our first four Art Sheroes of 2020, and we couldn’t be more excited by the boss girls in the art world this year already!

Sophie Matisse

Sophie Matisse, @sophiealexina

Why have we awarded her Shero status?

Sophie has been on our radar ever since the stunning Be Back in 5 Minutes series, in which she recreated old master paintings perfectly minus the figures in them. The great granddaughter of our Millennial favourite Matisse, Sophie’s stunning work has wowed us since we first laid eyes on it. She is currently working on a new series of small gouaches, exploring evolving perceptions.

We can’t wait to see where Sophie goes. Art Shero for sure!

Kate Shin

Kate Shin

How has her Shero status been solidified?

Art dealer Kate Shin is another kickass female that has been on our radar for too long. The amazing former finance guru and real estate developer has worked on the renovations of the Waterfall Mansion in New York, involving artists in meaningful ways including launching an artist residency programme alongside it. The Waterfall Arts Foundation encourages artists of all disciplines to work together, and the ethos is developed around helping each other, creativity and bringing people together. We just love that! And in doing so she developed a very close relationship with our next Shero of the month…

Sun K. Kwak

Sun K. Kwak

How has Sun achieved Shero-ism?

Sun’s work is amazing. Simple.

She uses masking tape to create ‘Space Drawings’. These instillations get bigger and bigger and are demolished after each show. She is now making work smaller, working alone rather than with hundreds of people to produce them.

She says ‘as long as it inspires me, I’ll continue’.

Go Sun!

Neri Oxman

Neri Oxman

What’s Neri been doing?

Although she is arguably most famous for being rumoured to date Hollywood hottie Brad Pitt, we are more interested in Neri as an accomplished artist.

We’re not the only ones that think so. Neri is so good she’s having a SOLO SHOW AT MoMA! Her inspiring work focusses on materials and ‘material ecology’. The show describes her work as having many influences, ‘from tree bark and crustaceans’ shells to silkworms and human breath, nature has influenced Neri Oxman’s design and production processes’. The show will run from 22nd February to 25th May 2020. See you there!
