This Goddess Is About to Grace Manhattan Rush Hour Traffic

Come June 5, drivers stuck in rush hour traffic at 30th Street and Tenth Avenue will see a 16-foot tall bronze bust of a black woman on the High Line’s new Plinth art alley.


Brick House, artist Simone Leigh’s sculpture fuses influences from both West Africa and the American South.

Simone created this gargantuan work, which has an Afro framed by cornrow braids, to pay homage to both areas’ architectural forms, as well as the human body.
