Have You Heard About The #pantyrespirators?
A young NYC artists raises important awareness about women’s rights
Art Stuff 21 Apr 2020

New York-based multidisciplinary artist, Hannah Bates, launched a new social media performance called @pantyrespirator. In this ongoing art piece, Bates transforms her own panties into face masks and sells them online for the average price of an abortion in the US, $950.

Why this at first may sound like a good way to earn an artist some extra money, her real cause is far from just getting herself in the press. Bates is using the concept to raise important awareness around women’s rights, which are deeply affected by the crisis these days around the globe. With many clinics being forced to close down while the virus is in place, and therefore also abortions hardly being accessible, many women also loose control over their own bodies. As face masks become expensive commodities and are being sold at skyrocketing prices, Bates says that costing them the same as an abortion “holds women’s reproductive rights to the same value as everyone’s right to healthcare during a crisis”.
