How To Cope Living With Parents During Quarantine
When they just don’t understand boundaries
Art Girls Jungle 30 Apr 2020

A lot of us decided to move back in with our parents once we knew that we weren’t going to be able to go out for a while. The idea of living at home seemed great at first: home-cooked meals, a laundry service, and a bedroom bigger than a cupboard. But, after a while, we remembered why it was so difficult living with our families in the first place. Like a grounded teenager again, and with no way out in sight, here’s a few tips for making living at home with your parents a little more easy.

Try To Explain What It Is That You Do

For most of us, our parents will simply never be able to fathom how we make money in the art world. How do you explain to a 65 year old the function of an artist liaison anyway? Sit down with your mom and dad and let them know what you do all day. Explain to them your working hours and kindly ask them to respect those. Hopefully they’ll leave you alone so you can get to work in peace.

Set Up A Home Office

Living at home, the likelihood of being interrupted in the middle of your zoom call is quite high. So, find a corner in your home to set-up a work desk and stick to it. Make it clear that this is YOUR space and you do not want to be interrupted. Bonus points if you score a workplace with a door.

Enforce A Routine

While there is temptation to work where and when you want while you’re at home, this may confuse your parents. Let them know when you’re working and what time your online yoga class is. Notifying your parents of your movements will let them know when you’re going to be busy, and it will also help you stick to that routine.

We all clash with our families from time to time, and when we’re all locked up under one roof, the odd argument here and there is inevitable. And, while you may think that your parents are annoying you, stop for a moment to think about when you might be annoying then. It’s a difficult process for all parties involved.

Help Around The House

You may have thought moving home would be like checking in to a hotel. But that is where you are wrong, if you help your mom and dad with small tasks around the home they are more likely to return the kindness your way when you need it. Every little helps…

While you may be busy with work for a lot of the time, there is nobody on this planet who will not have extra free time right now. Instead of always avoiding your parents around the house, spend some time with them. Look through old photo albums together or sit down to dinner together, you may never get this time again.
