How To Cope With Current Career Uncertainty
Because who knows when “normal” will return
Art Girls Jungle 30 Jul 2020

The world is upside down right now, and with working from home, furloughing and social distancing to deal with, most of us are feeling a little uncertain about our careers. While it’s completely natural to feel this way, we’re sure you’d rather be a little more comfortable, right? Here’s some tips with how to cope with career uncertainty during these very strange times.

Recognise What You’re Feeling

It’s OK to feel unsettled right now. To be honest, it would be more concerning if you weren’t feeling a bit nervous about your career. Things are changing from one day to the next, so really, please don’t feel bad, it’s completely natural.

Reassess What You Want

During this precarious time, it’s a good chance to consider whether you really want to stay in your current position. If you do, then great. But if not, think about what you were unhappy about before, and contemplate how you might change it. There is no point stressing over something that makes you unhappy when you could use this time to pivot towards something that will make you feel more fulfilled.

Embrace The Change

It’s going to take a long time for everything to go back to some sense of normal, so you will be making life a lot easier for yourself if you embrace the change. By coming to terms with the new state of play you will be better at tackling whatever comes your way.

Think About How You Can Future-Proof Your Career

Now is the time to think about how you can benefit yourself. This pandemic has shown what needs to change, and what you may need to do to make it happen. Use this time to embrace all things digital, study if you can and enrol in online courses. Potential future employers will be impressed that you took the initiative during a time of uncertainty.

Network, Network, Network

Now is the time to check in with previous colleagues, potential future colleagues and all of your extended networks. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up-to-date, take part in webinars and ensure everyone remembers your face. Even join a new network like The Art Gorgeous House. You never know what connection might be helpful to you and your career in the future.

Breathe

When times are strange it’s important to look after yourself too. While your career security is obviously at the front of your mind, it shouldn’t be the only thing on your mind. Check in with friends, have some fun and let loose, you’ll feel a LOT better for it!
