How to create a Facebook page for your art
A little guide on how to make it unique.

Artists in this current day and age know the importance of social media, but that doesn’t mean that they know how these tools can help. Being on Facebook as an artist can be daunting and confusing. You’ve created a page, and you’ve entered all the necessary information… now what? How do you gain a following on Facebook? How can you make the artist page visible to a large audience? Do artists even need a Facebook page? How can you maximize the social media platform to suit your needs?

1.  Create a catchy name

Your page’s name is the first thing (along with the profile image) that your fans and possible customers will come in contact with. While we all like to think that our personal names command a unique presence, as an artist, you must realize that most people who have not yet liked the page are discovering you and your work for the first time. It may be tempting to go simple and use your name, but remember that whatever you choose should be catchy, memorable, and easy to find. Many artists use an online persona or a specific artist name to make themselves more recognizable and easier to remember. Find out what makes your work special, and try to condense it into a few words. Your page name should reflect who you are as an artist, or what your artwork is focused on. The Facebook artist page name should deliver an essentialized version of what your art represents.

2. Post regularly
Having a diligent posting schedule is extremely important in growing engagement on your artist Facebook page. The more often you post, the more likely your followers will see your posts. At the same time, you don’t want to post so often that your followers find you irritating (as they may choose to unfollow the page, or hide your posts). Increasing the visibility of your artist page by posting regularly means you have chances to engage with your audience. Engagement is important, because it shows how many people are interested in what you have to say, or what you have to show. Having a steady stream of content is important for growing a fanbase. The less frequently you post, the more invisible you, your art, and your artist Facebook page becomes. Remember, people are following your page because they love your work! Feel free to get more vulnerable, and make sure to enjoy the attention and recognition you and your work are receiving from those adoring fans!

3. Strategize your posts
Facebook gives their users (including artists who have Facebook pages) useful tools for gauging the interest that their audience has for each post. Experiment and see at which time, among which audience, and with what kind of content, you get the most amount of engagement on your Facebook artist page with. This should help you determine what sort of content your followers want to see, and when your followers are most likely to see them. Depending on what you notice, you may be able to revamp your Facebook page posting strategy to better suit your audience. Get playful, and use that imaginative, creative mind of yours to explore what you can share with your audience!

4. The importance of images
As an artist, you most likely understand the power of images. Facebook pages that gain popularity almost always know how to effectively use visual media to catch the attention of their audience. Harness that visual power to not only post your own works, but to share other images and videos that may garner the interest of your audience. Preliminary sketches, works in progress, and videos of your creative process are some of the things many audience members crave to see on artist Facebook pages. You can also use this as a way to cross-promote your works with other similar artists.

5. Engagement
Measuring how many people are interested in the content you’re putting on your Facebook page is how you measure the success of your artist page. Engagement is measured by how many fans are reacting, commenting, and sharing your content. As a general rule, people interacting with artist Facebook pages are looking for digestible content that can be consumed quickly and easily. This means that Facebook posts should be short, images and video catchy, and your page should provide entertainment to the viewer. You can also encourage engagement by asking questions, or encouraging discussion within the comments. Promotions, giveaways, and contests are some other ways to increase engagement on your page–it can also get you more likes on your page. Engagement is also the key to visibility. The more people comment, react, and share your posts, the more visible you are to people who have yet to discover your Facebook artist page. Enjoy the interactions with your fans — it’s okay to acknowledge and respond! People love being appreciated and acknowledged for their opinions.

6. Have a cohesive brand
Your artist Facebook page is a marketing tool. Brand your page to fit who you are as a creator. All posts should be relevant to your work, or who you are as an artist. Do not mistake the page as a personal social media platform, and put careful thought into how you want to portray yourself and your work on Facebook. Find your niche, and make sure that it is cohesively executed throughout the entire page. Most importantly, make sure the brand is entirely you!
