By now you’ve probably seen some unusual things happening in peoples backgrounds while on Zoom meetings: a messy house, weird art, a quasi-dressed partner getting milk in the kitchen…Video calls are giving your colleagues a glance into your personal space for possibly the first time ever. While you may not be able to stop the quasi-dressed partner passing the webcam or your pets/kids charging into the home office, you can change the visual backdrop of your conference call.

Here we share our tips for creating the perfect backdrop that will make the personal invasion something to be proud of, rather than embarrassed.

Choose a nice artwork
Why not move some artwork around your home tactfully or if you don’t have any why not treat yourself and purchase a new piece to decorate your walls? While galleries and shops are closed for the time being, there are lots of fantastic places to source art online, including Instagram. You could also make some of your own art work now you have more time your hands. This will not only lift your mood but also add some intrigue to Zoom backdrops.

Time for a Spring clean
Time to Spring clean your home office and remove all the clutter. You don’t need to put away everything. Keep the objects that hold significant meaning and/or things that can please the eye – like a stunning sculpture, some beautiful artsy coffee table books, or a blossoming vase full of flowers.

Green Fingers!
Plant mums rejoice! Biophilic design is all the rage right now. Plants are also grounding, especially when you’re working from home and stuck indoors during this wonderful Spring weather. They also make for a beautiful backdrop and bring another form of life into your calls. Just make sure they are alive and kicking. No one wants to witness a plant wilting away.

Think about your desk chair
Stay away from the sofa! Either purchase a new office chair (you may be WFH longer than you think) or go for a substantial dining chair. You can always cover the chair to look chicer or add a nice cushion for better back support.

Do watch paint dry!
While you’re on lock-down with more time on your hands, why not schuh up walls by adding a fresh new colour palette? It can transform the energy of a room.

Choose a quirky Zoom backdrop
And if that all fails why not choose a fun zoom backdrop to cheer up your colleagues? Simply log in to the Zoom web portal, click Room Management > Zoom Rooms. Click Account Settings at the top of the page. In the Account Profile tab, under Background image for Zoom Rooms, click Upload New Image. …Select your image and click Open.
