How To Look Your Best On Zoom
Meeting aesthetics in the digital realm
Art Girls Jungle 14 Apr 2020

The world of work has a new app that it can’t live without: zoom! No matter if you’re into video calls or not, you can’t really get away with not engaging with them anymore. Quarantine has seen the rise or digital interaction, with many of us taking multiple zoom calls per day. But have any of us actually mastered it yet? Video-call etiquette is still quite new. So, here are a few tips to help you look your best in your next zoom call.

Sit At A Desk

While you may be tempted to zoom from bed, or zoom from couch, don’t. Hunching over your laptop is not a good look, and you’ll definitely be tempted to wriggle. Make sure you’re set up at a table or desk, sitting at a chair will also make sure you have good posture and will make everyone feel more comfortable.

Tidy Up

Take your zoom meeting in a clean part of your house. While designating just a slither of your home to cleanliness may seem like an easy option, you’re likely to be nervous that the camera moves beyond your face or that your caller sees a disorganised part of your home. You’ll feel much better if you’re taking the call in a clean and relaxed environment.

Prepare

It’s not a good look if you keep getting up to grab the things you might need during your call. Have a notepad, pens and a bottle of water at your desk, that way everything you might need will be on hand from the get-go.

Tell Your Quarantine Crew To Shut Up

This one’s important. You’re likely to be in quarantine with friends or family, who are all subject to being noisy, arguing with each other or pumping out rave music at 10am. Let them know 30 minutes before your call that you are about to take a meeting. If they’re decent humans, they’ll respect you.

Smile

As the song goes: “when you’re smiling, the whole world smiles with you.” If you are calm, happy and relaxed, you instantly look better and in control. Your good aura will also be viewable through the webcam (even if you think it won’t), meaning it’s likely that you’ll get your colleague onside within minutes.

Get Fully Dressed

You’re not leaving the house, so you may wish to keep your PJ bottoms on. But please, make sure you wear a complete outfit. You might have to get up at some point or other, and your caller won’t be too impressed if they discover you’re slobbing about in your sleepwear during your meeting.

Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean you can’t brush your hair or give yourself a manicure. These small acts of self-care will make you feel and look better. You’ll be surprised at the kind of details people can pick-up through your webcam.
