Fashion photography didn’t always have the respect it has today – they were advertisements in magazines to sell clothes. Now, looking back, they’re high art.
At the J. Paul Getty Museum, fashion photography finally gets the respect it deserves in “Icons of Style: A Century of Fashion Photography, 1911-2011,” which features roughly 200 artworks – from photos to magazine covers and garments – to show the power of fashion photography.

There are shots by Richard Avedon, Erwin Blumenfeld and Bruce Weber, as well as lesser-known photographers like Willy Maywald, Neal Barr and Kourken Pakchanian. Naturally, the iconic photographer Helmut Newton is in the exhibition, showing gender-bending shots of models in Paris. As he famously once said: “A fashion photograph should look like anything but a fashion photograph.”
