The Polygon Gallery

Until filled

Organization Description:

Situated on the unceded territories of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), səl̓ilwətaɁɬ(Tsleil-Waututh), and xwməθkwəýəm (Musqueam) Nations, The Polygon Gallery is a vibrant art institution that creatively responds to shifting perceptions of the world through the histories and evolving technologies of photography and related media. For over four decades (the majority as Presentation House Gallery) the organization has presented more than 300 exhibitions, earning a reputation as one of Canada’s most adventurous public art galleries.

Job Description:

Preparators are part of a small crew of casual workers called upon intermittently to work during our exhibition changeover periods. These installations reoccur every 2-3 months according to The Polygon Gallery’s exhibition schedule, and consist of 3-5 weeks of focused, often full-time, employment during this time. Overtime or evening/weekend work will be required on occasion. Hours are not guaranteed and vary depending on the scope of each exhibition. This is an ideal position for candidates with other casual employment or an art practice of their own.

The Polygon provides sufficient flexibility in work arrangements to ensure that candidates are able to accomplish their work while maintaining healthy lives with personal and family obligations and passions outside of their careers.

Applicants are now invited to apply for the position of Art Preparator, reporting to the Director of Operations and Exhibition Production. The successful candidate will perform duties related to the construction, installation, and de-installation of gallery exhibitions; to the packing, shipping, and receiving of artwork; and to the general maintenance of gallery, storage, and workshop areas. The foremost responsibility of the Art Preparator is ensuring the safety and condition of all artwork being moved, installed or stored at the gallery.

The successful candidate should have:
•Excellent communication skills
•Keen attention to detail and strong organizational skills
•The ability to collaborate well in a team environment and to work efficiently under own direction
•The ability to anticipate the next steps of a project and the initiative and motivation to proceed
•The patience and maturity to see projects through to completion (including clean up)
•The ability to improvise and creatively problem-solve when installation challenges arise
•A commitment to operating according to personal health and safety best practices
•The knowledge and confidence to safely operate power tools
•A level of comfort with heights and heavy-lifting
•An understanding of museum standards regarding the care and handling of art objects

If you don’t meet 100% of the above qualifications, but believe you could excel in this role, we encourage you to apply. Attitude, aptitude, and the willingness to ask questions are more crucial to the role than prior experience in the field.

How to Apply:

Please use your cover letter to tell us about your interest in the position and the visual arts, what makes you a strong candidate, and what you hope to bring to this role. We encourage applications from candidates with a broad range of backgrounds, including age, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, class, and ability.

To apply, please send a resume and cover letter in a single document to Nomi Stricker at [email protected]. Interviews with qualified candidates will begin in January. The position will be posted until filled. Only those invited for an interview will be contacted

$22-$28, commensurate with experience
