JOB OVERVIEW

SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Assistant/Associate Conservator, Paintings should have knowledge of unconventional materials and art works as well as expertise in modern and contemporary paintings conservation. The Assistant or Associate Conservator, Paintings should demonstrate a firm grasp of theoretical principles in contemporary conservation, as well as some experience interviewing and working with living artists. Knowledge of analytical techniques, such as XRF and FTIR for identifying materials is desirable as is a spirit of innovation, curiosity and collaboration.

General responsibilities will include hands-on treatment, involvement in exhibition preparation and installation, loan evaluations, acquisition assessments, and materials research. As an important member of the team, the Assistant/Associate Conservator will participate in engagement activities that raise the profile of the department for patrons and the general public, and will carry out research for presentation and publication.

The conservator will work with all members of the Conservation department and with a range of other colleagues across the museum, including curatorial, registration, art handling, exhibition management, and education.

SKILL AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience in modern and contemporary paintings conservation.
  • Excellent hand skills.
  • Knowledge of collection databases, imaging techniques and documentation methodologies.
  • Strong art historical background in modern and contemporary art.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Attention to detail with the capability to prioritize while handling multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to be proactive, use independent judgment and initiative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Examine, analyze, and treat paintings in the Guggenheim collection, adhering to the highest standards.
  • Prepare loan evaluations, attend exhibition and loan meetings.
  • Examine, document, and advise on new acquisitions.
  • Oversee installations and travel as courier when necessary.
  • Assist with maintaining a modern and well-equipped lab.
  • Mentor fellows, interns, and teens.
  • Collaborate with Senior Conservator, Chief Conservator, and curatorial colleagues in critically assessing paintings and devising treatment strategies.
  • Provide written and photographic documentation to record condition of objects, treatments proposed, and treatments performed according to the AIC Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.

WORK DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENT:

  • Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim’s owned or leased properties upon request.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays on occasion.
  • Willingness to work with chemical solvents and/or fumes, adhering to appropriate safety protocols.
  • Travel to international locations including museums within the Guggenheim constellation, on occasion.

EDUCATION:

  • Master’s Degree in Art Conservation

REPORTS TO: Senior Paintings Conservator

LOCATION:  Midtown West, Manhattan and 1071 Fifth Avenue New York, NY

WORK SCHEDULE: 40 Hours per Week, Schedule TBD

POSITION TYPEFull-time, Exempt.  This position will become a position covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with Local 2110 UAW.
