Assistant Objects Conservator
Assistant Objects Conservator
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)
Post Date: 13 Oct 2021

We endeavor to create a safe environment that allows us to do what we do best – share the art of our time with passion and purpose. Accordingly, as a part of our commitment to health and safety, COVID-19 vaccination is required for all current and newly hired employees and contractors.’

The Elise S. Haas Conservation Studio of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art seeks an Assistant Objects Conservator to join their team in the preservation, conservation, research, and display of modern and contemporary artworks, and in the exploration and documentation of artists’ practices.

The art of our time necessitates new models of care for preservation and access, and SFMOMA conservators work collaboratively both intra- and inter- departmentally to address new challenges presented in unorthodox materials and emerging art-making methods. A shared studio space for five conservation disciplines (electronic media, objects, paintings, paper, and photography) supports synergistic exploration. Multiple hybrid Collections spaces within the museum and Collection Center underpin collections care through expansive staff expertise. The Artist Materials Collection contains physical manifestations of artists’ practices and is displayed and housed on the Inge-Lise Eckmann Lane Artist Materials Tower in the center of the Conservation studio.

Under the supervision of the Head of Conservation (trained as an objects conservator), the Assistant Objects Conservator assists in overseeing the conservation of sculpture and design objects in the collection. They work collaboratively with other departmental conservators on the care of objects of mixed media. The Assistant Conservator performs examination of artworks, preparation of treatment proposals and execution of conservation treatment of works being considered for acquisition, loan, and display. The level of responsibility and autonomy in decision-making vary depending on projects and level of expertise required.

The Assistant Objects Conservator works alongside conservators in the department to:

  • Acknowledge that our profession is not neutral, and that we must intentionally and regularly revisit our assumptions, approaches, and practice in the work we do to promote a more equitable and inclusive practice.
  • Assist in developing initiatives aimed at fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.
  • Aid in activating equitable conservation training at multiple levels, including the post-graduate Fellowship in the Conservation of Contemporary Art and pre-program opportunities.
  • Stay current with international approaches to the conservation of contemporary art.
  • Assist in the general operation of the conservation studio and in researching new methods for documentation that more fully represent the stories held by works in the collection.

SFMOMA is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity.

If you are already a paid SFMOMA employee and are interested in applying for the above position, please apply directly through the website by the closing date.
