Job Title:                         Cataloguer, Old Master Paintings

Reporting to:                 Head of Research, Old Master Paintings

Department:                 Old Master Division

Location:                         34–35 New Bond Street, London

Key Objectives:             To catalogue, organise, plan and lead on the mid-season and online sales; to catalogue and research Old Master paintings in the Day and Evening sales; to assist and in certain cases lead valuations and in due course to gather business for the above sales at New Bond Street


Responsibilities include:

  • Cataloguing and researching items for the Old Master sales, encompassing European paintings from the late 13th to early 19th centuries:
    • Taking an independent approach to the research and cataloguing of objects to the highest standard according to scheduled deadlines
    • Corresponding with external experts
    • Writing condition reports
  • Delivering the mid-season programme, including cataloguing, production, marketing and targeting/ selling
  • Digital catalogue production for mid-season and online sales, including:
    • Lot order and layouts
    • Liaising with Sale Manager, Catalogue Production and other support departments (design; colour-checking; proofing)
    • Producing marketing material
  • Dealing with day-to-day client enquiries at the counter, through the online enquiry portal, by email and on the telephone
  • Responding to estimate enquiries, general correspondence and photo requests
  • Developing and managing client relationships
  • Assisting the Senior Experts with the research of paintings in private collections for valuations, proposals and other purposes
  • Assisting with the maintenance of the OMP library and archive system
  • Operating at all times in accordance with the company’s rules on compliance and corporate Governance.


Skills / Competencies / Experience:

  • Education to degree level in History of Art (BA or MA)
  • Strong experience in Old Masters, ideally in an auction environment
  • Excellent research skills
  • The ability to summarise research and communicate well in writing
  • Knowledge of at least one other European language
  • The ability to work effectively individually and in a team and to ‘pitch in’ when required
  • Good team working skills with the ability to both delegate and provide senior members of staff and colleagues with support
  • Be able to demonstrate a strong record in client relationship management and a sensitive approach to problem solving
  • Possess high levels of integrity and be able to operate within corporate governance and legal framework
  • Be self-motivated with a proactive approach
  • Ability to work well under pressure and a flexible approach to a wide range of tasks
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a commitment to an exemplary level of client service
  • Strong organisational skills with proven ability of meeting deadlines
