Curator of Museum Education & Engagement Job Description

Reports to:
CEO

Responsibilities:  Serve as the head of the education and programming department and create and implement all educational programs for the Museum focused on increasing audience engagement for both adults and children; devise interpretations of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions for all audiences and learning levels; and incorporate a variety of artistic, cultural, and intellectual perspectives to engage the public and provide exceptional experiences for all ages and audiences in fulfillment of the Museum’s mission and strategic vision.

Education: 

  • Maintain a commitment to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion and access and community service through the development of summer programming, weekly workshops, family activities, vacation workshops, special programs, and guest lecturers on the collection and special exhibitions.
  • Coordinate Museum and public programs with local and regional constituencies and assist with public events as needed.
  • Assess existing programs and department routines and plans to build on excellence in the creation of an effective and efficient department.
  • Conduct gallery talk and tours.
  • Create and execute outreach programs for underserved audiences and communities.
  • Prepare material for all communications and publications in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide presentations at public and community events on the Museum’s behalf.
  • Advocate for art education and the use of the Museum as an educational resource.
  • Direct and oversee educational exhibitions including the annual High School Juried Show
  • Provide information for grant proposals as requested

Docent Program:   

  • Develop and maintain an active docent program.
  • Work with Curator to develop docent training curriculum and materials.
  • Schedule and present programs and lectures related to art history/appreciation, exhibitions, the permanent collection, and tour methodologies.
  • Oversee the evaluation of docents annually; maintain records of docent participation.
  • Coordinate and manage with visitor services staff tour booking and scheduling.

Administration:

  • Supervise all personnel involved in the education programs of the Museum including volunteers, committee members, artists, guest lecturers/educators, and interns.
  • Prepare the education department budget for approval by the CEO.
  • Work with the Development Staff on grants, sponsorship, publicity and social media strategies in support of education programs and special projects.

All other duties as assigned by CEO.

Requirements:  MA in Museum Education, Art History, Fine Art or a related field is preferred; 3-5 years of experience in museum education, knowledge of current methodologies and the use of new technologies in museum education; proven track record as a manager and effective leader and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Strong communication, organizational, speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills.
