The Editor, Communications is responsible for content creation and editing of various public-facing messaging platforms—website, blog, quarterly magazine, interactive features, and e-communications—focusing specifically on managing the editorial content and calendar for the website as well as overseeing the monthly e-newsletters. The Communications Editor also oversees the distribution of editing projects across Communications team members and manages the department’s budget and minimal invoices. Editorial work includes ensuring that communications not only adhere to the museum’s style guidelines but that they reflect the museum’s institutional goals, align with the Marketing and Communications editorial calendar, and use the museum’s established voice and an audience-appropriate tone. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME Council 31.
- Manages the calendar and content for the website’s many customizable pages—homepage, exhibitions landing page, etc.
- Plans, solicits content, and creates copy for emails, including monthly newsletters and event emails.
- Contributes content and editing for Communications-led projects: website, blog, magazine, eblasts.
- Reviews, edits, and proofreads a variety of the museum’s communications, including signs, newsletters, invitations, postcards, brochures, e-newsletters, eblasts, and web copy.
- Manages intake and distribution of digital and print jobs that require editing by the Communications team. This includes ensuring team capacity and appropriate timeline for jobs and editor assignment.
- Manages departmental spending, vendor contracts, and invoicing.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer; must be able to remain in a stationary position 90% of the time.
- Bachelor’s degree required
- 2–3 years previous writing and editing experience preferred
- Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and proofreading marks
- Past experience with website content management systems
- Familiarity with basic design programs like Adobe Acrobat, Reader, InDesign preferred
- Familiarity with project management applications such as Basecamp, Smartsheet, and Jira
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively on multiple projects and tight deadlines
