Job Description:

Foundation Department at Otis College of Art and Design invites application for a full-time, non-tenure track Assistant Professor with Life Drawing and Drawing focuses. It is a renewable non-tenure track, full-time, and benefits-eligible position starting in spring 2023. The position possesses a strong commitment to teaching a broad range of Foundation courses offered within our first-year core curriculum. The Assistant Professor is responsible for and contributes to teaching and curriculum development of undergraduate Foundation courses, student advising, departmental and college service and committee involvement, and creative professional practice. Areas of knowledge and expertise may include but are not limited to current practices in: traditional and contemporary life drawing and drawing.

Must be able to work efficiently, cooperatively and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities and Expectations:

• Teach courses as scheduled and in alignment with the mission and learning outcomes of the Department and College : 18 contact hours per week each Fall and Spring semester and perform service as noted.

• Evaluate and improve the course content and pedagogy relevant to contemporary approaches and academic and industry standards including introducing and discussing diverse topics beyond Euro-centric approaches and creating inclusive learning environment.

• Demonstrate commitment to student success and a healthy classroom environment.

• Advise and mentor diverse students outside of class hours regarding academic issues during the defined office hours.

• Maintain active creative and professional practices and active professional network.

• Serve 6 hours on average per week in service to the department and the College, as assigned by the Department Chair.

• Demonstrate professionalism and cooperation with colleagues and sustained efforts and initiatives to achieve departmental and college goals.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

• MFA degree in a field related to a Life Drawing and Drawing Emphasis.

• Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in first-year art and design fundamentals with an expertise in the field of Life Drawing, Drawing, or related field.

• Substantial knowledge of historical and contemporary artists and designers.

•. Demonstrated ability to develop a successful course relating to the fundamentals of Life Drawing and Drawing courses.

• Sustained record of creative and professional practice in a related field.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, problem-solving and collaborative skills.

• Strong ability to work creatively and effectively with a diverse student body as part of a team of professional designers, artists, and educators.

• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with various constituencies within Otis’s diverse communities, internally and externally.

• Demonstrated superior interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment.

Minimum Preferred Qualifications:

• Two years of teaching experience beyond graduate school.

• Skills and knowledge in digital drawing tools.

• Excellent organization skills and working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive, Adobe Suite, digital products including Outlook.

• Willingness to learn and teach in other areas of the Foundation program.


Otis College of Art and Design, established in 1918, has been a national leader in art and design education for nearly 100 years. Independent, nonprofit, and regionally and nationally accredited, Otis College offers M.F.A and B.F.A. degrees.

The College’s mission is to educate a diverse community of students to become highly skilled, well-informed, and responsible professionals empowering them to shape the world.

The Foundation is the first-year program at Otis, which provides students seeking B.F.A degrees fundamentals of art and design. The Liberal Arts and Sciences provides broad interdisciplinary and specialized knowledge, as well as intellectual and critical skills through the themes of creativity, diversity, sustainability, social responsibility, and identity.

B.F.A. majors include Digital Media, Communication Arts, Environmental Design, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Product Design, and Toy Design. Students explore real-world skills in industry-standard technology, as well as concept development from leading designers, artists, and entrepreneurs.

The five-acre campus is located on L.A.’s Westside near the beach and LAX where approximately 1,100 full time students are enrolled. All Students enjoy exploring Otis College facilities including Painting studios, Photography Lab, Lighting studio and Green Screen, Video Lab, Laboratory Press, Wood and Metal Shop, Model Shop, Printmaking Shop, Sculpture Studio, Ceramics Studio, Library, Learning Center, Residence Housing, Student Health and Wellness Center, and more.
