Hauser & Wirth is one of the world’s leading contemporary art galleries with offices in Zurich, Gstaad, St. Moritz, London, Somerset, New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong. Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, located in a historic 100,000 square foot flour mill complex in the city’s burgeoning downtown Arts District, opened to the public in March 2016. The gallery transformed the site’s sprawling collection of late 19th and early 20th century buildings and outdoor spaces into a dynamic multi-disciplinary arts center. The new venue offers innovative exhibitions, museum-caliber amenities, and a robust schedule of public programs that contextualize the art on view, drawing upon, illuminating, and contributing to the urban culture of Los Angeles.

We are looking for a Gallery Assistant to join our team in Los Angeles. This position requires great attention to detail, organization, diplomacy and an in-depth understanding of the gallery world. The Gallery Assistant is expected to plan, communicate and act independently and collaboratively, as projects require.


Front Desk

  • Answering phones and managing general gallery voicemail and inbox
  • Handling all outgoing mail, including FedEx, USPS and messenger deliveries
  • Responsibility for mailings such as exhibition invitation cards, catalogues, books and other
  • Coordinating incoming and outgoing book shipments – incl. storage
  • Making sure gallery is always neat for every occasion, maintaining the high standards of gallery appearance both during exhibitions and in between shows
  • Maintain all book displays, exhibition materials and signage
  • Staffing the front desk and managing sales in the gallery book shop
  • Organized filing and record keeping
  • Responsibility for managing new address entries and updates
  • Ordering and storage of office equipment, stationary and general office supplies as well as kitchen supplies
  • Ensuring that the archive and main library are constantly up to date and well organized
  • Assist with travel arrangements of staff and visitors
  • Assist with art fair preparations
  • Hiring, training, and supervising gallery interns
  • Hiring, training, and supervising gallery invigilators

Exhibition organization

  • Compiling guest lists for opening dinners
  • Supervise distribution of invitations, RSVPs, and guest lists
  • Organization of gallery openings and exhibition events
  • Set up and dismantle for events
  • Organize hotel bookings for artists and their assistants
  • Assist with any promotional and marketing events and activities
  • Provide administrative support to the Education Department in the organization of tours and public events


  • A minimum of two years experience in an art gallery
  • 5 day work week, with overtime as required
  • Flexible schedule with weekend availability
  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and follow instructions
  • Ability and confidence to take initiative
  • Knowledge of and passion for modern and contemporary art
  • Exceptional customer service skills and a friendly demeanor
  • Computer proficiency (particularly with Mac OS X, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Apps for Business) and willingness to learn new programs as necessary
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to prioritize and multitask
