The Role
The Junior Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting the Specialists in the department with business-getting. They also collaborate with the Head of Sale and the Cataloguer to research and process property that comes in to the department for auction and private sale. Supporting business-getting within the department year-round, they review auction estimate requests, attend on-site appraisal visits, determine values and auction estimates for photographs being appraised or pitched for sale, and support the International Head with complex projects involving important collections and objects being sourced for auction and private sale. When the department approaches major auction deadlines, or faces concurrent deadlines, the Junior Specialist will contribute to cataloguing, research, photography scheduling, and varying duties as dictated by the Head of Sale.

Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to

  • Assist business-getters with appraisals and “selection for sale” lists: liaise between Trust & Estates and department; undertake research for appraisal documents
  • Assist business-getters in preparing proposal documents for potential consignments
  • Responsible for client correspondence, including auction estimate requests, general enquiries, sale proposals and post-sale communication to clients
  • Assist in business generation and long term client development in association with, and supervision of, senior specialists; work to manage a network of clients and contacts.
  • Greet/visit clients on-site and off-site to support appraisal, consignment and sale efforts
  • Develop own specialist knowledge in order to build credibility in a specialist area, build an understanding of the current Photography market and the key players.
  • Coordinate with internal departments including (but not limited to) Marketing, Production, Proposals, and Web Production to produce catalogues, assets for website, and other marketing materials.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sale & Cataloguer to research property for bibliography, provenance and exhibition history using libraries, on-line databases, the internet, and outside experts (such as curators, dealers, publishers, etc.), as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sale & Cataloguer to monitor photography progress, liaise with photo studio on missing images, and manage deadline constraints, as needed
  • Flag any authenticity concerns and condition issues to Head of Sale in a timely manner
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sale & Cataloguer to coordinate restoration and framing, as needed
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sale & Cataloguer to prepare property for hilling sessions (meetings to determine value, condition, and marketability of property); amend catalogue sheets after hilling sessions, when necessary
  • Collaborate with the Head of Sale & Cataloguer to prepare condition reports in the system and review with Head of Sale
  • Contribute to enhanced lot page essays, production and exhibition set-up
  • Keep all property details organized and filed in specific folders
  • Write and prepare specialist speaking points, as needed
  • Assist clients in galleries during preview weekend, exhibition view dates, and sale week
  • Send out special interest letters to market each upcoming auction, as assigned
  • Participate in Telephone Bidding with clients during live auctions
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

The Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree in the fine art category preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum 2 years paid experience in the Arts, ideally at an auction house or gallery specializing in photography
  • Knowledge of E-mail, Spreadsheet, Word Processing and Presentation software (Microsoft Office preferred)
  • Ability to learn Christie’s systems including JDE, Canvas, COS, intranet and website.
  • Strong typing skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including superior written and spoken communication
  • Superior client service skills
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize
  • Strong follow-up skills with attention to detail
  • Required to handle, inspect and/or take photographs of works of art for appraisal and consignment.
  • Required to create written or recorded descriptions of inspected items.
  • Required to attend events, exhibitions, art fairs locally, domestically and possibly internationally.
  • Required to travel (local, domestic and possibly international).

Compensation Range
Salary: $50,000.00 – $56,000.00
