A cornerstone of the ambitious West Kowloon Cultural District Project, M+ is Hong Kong’s new museum for visual culture encompassing twentieth and twenty-first century art, design and architecture, and moving image from Hong Kong, greater China, Asia, and beyond. The Exhibitions and Displays department are an enthusiastic and motivated team with a strong commitment to collaboration across the museum and cultural district.

An experienced and skilled individual is required to lead object installations for M+. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Installations and Displays, the appointee will manage a team of art technicians and work closely with external contractors to ensure safe handling, installation, lighting, packing, transport and storage of works of art for M+. The Installation team works alongside the Production team to ensure the objects are installed according to the exhibition schedule.

The ideal candidate should possess a passion for visual culture and demonstrated experience installing complex objects and art in a museum environment. Adept with logistics, planning and resource allocation, the individual should be highly organized and motivated to work within a team and encourage a growth mindset.

You will be responsible for:

  • managing and coordinating key phases of the handling and installation of works of art for exhibitions;
  • recruiting, supervising, training and developing the Art Technicians, overseeing daily team operations and aligning team values and goals with the museum;
  • working in close coordination with the exhibitions production team to build relationships, trust and workflows between teams to ensure maximum efficiency while minimising risk;
  • managing day-to-day resources including scheduling in close coordination with Exhibition Managers and Registrars, and assisting Senior Manager, Installations and Displays to develop installation and budget plans;
  • collaborating closely with Registration teams to provide support for collection management activities ensuring accurate documentation;
  • ensuring all Occupational Health and Safety measures are well understood, adhered to, actively maintained and recorded, throughout the installation and (de)installation process;
  • assisting Senior Manager on the creation of policies and procedures for art handling and storage; ensuring these polices are well documented and understood;
  • ensuring workshops, equipment and materials, storage areas and loading docks are kept in order;
  • liaising with other relevant departments within the Authority regularly to ensure all safety protocols are followed; and
  • providing ad hoc support to supervisor when necessary.

You should:

  • possess a recognised university degree in art, design, museum studies or related disciplines;
  • have at least 8 years of experience working in art handling or exhibition installation in museum or gallery with preferably 3 years in supervisory role and proven management skills;
  • have strong project and resource management skills in order to ensure staff and resources are well allocated across multiple projects;
  • have comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of art handling and installation techniques, tools and equipment as well as market practices;
  • have experience with budget tracking and reporting as well as complying with sophisticated procurement protocols and systems;
  • demonstrate a flexible approach to meeting changing priorities and demands, be able to remain calm under pressure;
  • have solid people management skills through effective mentoring and delegation to empower and motivate your direct reports as well as other stakeholders;
  • have strong organisational and problem-solving skills, be patient and detail-oriented;
  • be able to collaborate with others effectively in a diversified team and culture;
  • have good computer skills including Microsoft Office preferably with good knowledge of computerised collection management database;
  • Able to read and understand 3D models from standard modelling software: such as SketchUp and as well as read and understand design drawings building plans and crating designs;
  • have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and preferably in Chinese;
  • Have a clear understanding of health and safety concerns with regards to art handling and experience with permit applications SWMS and other project planning in regards to health and safety;
  • Have experience handling, installing, and designing packing solutions for large or complicated artworks: heavy sculptures, installation art, oversize paintings AV and new media artwork;
  • Rigging and hoisting experience preferred; and
  • be required to work irregular hours, weekend and public holidays when deemed necessary.
