The Institute of Modern Art is looking for a creative and passionate Marketing and Communications Manager to connect global audiences to our expansive artistic program. As Marketing and Communications Manager, you will oversee all IMA’s marketing, communications, and publicity activities, ensuring that our distinctive identity reflects this vision, and the voices of the many artists we work with.


Job title: Marketing and Communications Manager

FTE: Full time, 37.5 hours per week (flexible working arrangements and FTE can be negotiated)

Salary: $57,000 – $65,000 (dependant on experience) + superannuation

The purpose of the Marketing and Communications Manager is to position the IMA as a national leader in contemporary art and to engage local, national and international audiences across marketing and communications platforms. Working closely with program artists and curators; the Executive Director; Assistant Director, Programs and Operations; Assistant Director, Development and Operations; Education Manager and Public Programs Manager, this role is responsible for developing and implementing the IMA’s marketing and communications activities: including publicity; digital and print campaigns; audience engagement activities and project campaigns. Standard working hours are between Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm, however due to the nature of this role, the employee will be required to work flexible hours, including out of normal office hours.


Marketing and Communications

  • Develop and lead the marketing and communications strategy for IMA including identifying and communicating with stakeholders and understanding segmented audiences for programmes, events and development opportunities
  • Develop and deliver innovative, data-driven audience development strategies and initiatives that focus on reaching new and diverse audiences and creating an optimal audience experience
  • Report on audience research and visitor analytics
  • Translate audience insights into marketing strategies/activations
  • Working with Assistant Director, Programs and Operations, Education Manager and Public Programs Manager to develop and implement IMA’s audience development strategy
  • Lead the development and implementation of all marketing campaigns and contribute to IMA audience engagement goals
  • Ensure the IMA meets its marketing obligations to all partners, sponsors, government, artists and curators according to contracts, and tracks reporting metrics
  • Devise an annual marketing plan for approval by the Executive Director
  • Build and protect IMA brand and ensure optimum continuity, image and positioning
  • Execute all marketing activities including campaign, publications of printed material, in-house graphic design, publicity, website, direct marketing, and digital marketing
  • With the Executive Director and Publicist ensure that the programme and IMA brand are optimised and promoted across media outlets
  • Produce and proof compelling copy for IMA outputs, including website, e-newsletters and social media
  • Develop and manage media partnerships, as well as external stakeholder relations
  • Work with IMA contractors, including graphic designers and Publicists
  • Design internal documents such as fundraising material, Annual Report, and Artistic Program
  • Plan and monitor budgetary income and expenditure, reconciling with month end finance and related activities so that management accounts can be completed promptly
  • Produce monthly marketing reports
  • Work with the Assistant Director, Development and Operations on coordinated approaches to communication of fundraising campaigns

A bold and creative problem solver, you will write compelling copy and deliver eye-catching marketing campaigns across socials, our website, print and e-media. You will also work closely with our programming team, to find new ways to connect audiences to our artistic program, which includes exhibitions, education, publications, public programs and digital outputs. Collaborative, professional and level headed, you will enjoy working in a small team and busy environment, while able to balance competing priorities and multiple projects. Your capacity to lead with initiative and confidence in a will set you apart, as will your ability to think creatively on a small budget.


  • Previous experience in a similar marketing and communications role, preferably small to medium sector and/or visual arts organisation
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering marketing assets across the following platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Mailchimp, WordPress, print media 
  • Basic graphic design skills and experience using Photoshop and Indesign
  • A passion for and interest in contemporary visual art
  • Highly developed written communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills, including the ability to prioritise tasks and plan ahead
  • Ability to build strong and collaborative working relationships both internally and externally
  • Outstanding interpersonal, relationship management and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team


  • Experience using Premiere Pro
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Tertiary qualifications in marketing, communications, media or business-related degree
