Media Arts Curatorial Intern
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
Post Date: 14 Feb 2022

Values and Mission Statement

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the United States and a thriving cultural center for the Bay Area. We cannot imagine life without art; it inspires and connects us every day. Now more than ever, these connections matter, and are aligned with our values.

Inclusive: We know we make the greatest impact when a full range of voices is represented.

  • Passionate: We believe art and the creative process can open our minds to help us build a better world.
  • Brave: We nurture a responsive, action-oriented atmosphere fueled by curiosity and innovation.
  • Empathic: We aim to act like a person, not an institution, and forge authentic relationships with our community.

SFMOMA is a place for the infinitely curious to explore, support and experience the art of our time. We believe that modern and contemporary art can influence the way we think, view the world, and embrace the many voices and perspectives around us. We aspire to foster an environment that elicits joy, nurtures a sense of belonging and purpose—where difference is seen as a strength, and everyone is appreciated for their whole self.

From immersive installations to participation-based pieces, the works in our Media Arts collection become activated when exhibited. Our Media Arts department reflects on how artists have used various technologies in their work since the 1960s. The collection encompasses a diverse range of time-based media artworks, including video, film, slide, sound, computer-based and online projects as well as live performances. We not only commission new work for our dedicated galleries, but also explore how to create engaging experiences in public spaces throughout the museum.

Reflecting the Bay Area’s tradition of technological innovation and forward thinking, SFMOMA is a leader in the presentation, collection, and preservation of time-based media works. Our Department of Media Arts, established in 1987, was among the first of its kind in the United States.

The Media Arts Curatorial Intern will join SFMOMA’s Media Arts curators in researching and developing resources on our collection of critical time-based work. Specifically, the intern will work closely with Assistant Curator of Media Arts on flushing out practical and conceptual lessons regarding collection works following a major traveling exhibition.

Nam June Paik, a 2019-2022 touring retrospective organized by Tate Modern and SFMOMA, and in collaboration with Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and National Gallery of Singapore, brought together over 200 innovative works by the visionary experimental artist Nam June Paik that span over five decades of his career, including important works in SFMOMA’s collection holdings. After the conclusion of this popular exhibition, the Media Arts department will conduct an in-depth study on SFMOMA collection works presented at the three touring venues and SFMOMA. This research project provides an opportunity for cross-departmental collaboration of gathering information, documentation, and producing records on the installation decisions, curatorial and conservation approaches, and visitor reception of exhibited works. These records will in turn inform future presentations and loans out activities, and ultimately support our ongoing care and stewardship of Paik’s artworks in our collection.

Through transformative joint acquisitions and gifts of major works by Paik in 2015 and 2020 by the departments of Media Arts and Painting and Sculpture, SFMOMA has become one of the foremost repositories of the artist’s wide-ranging work. In this position, and intern will:

  • Understand the ins and outs of a curatorial department through close work with Media Arts curators.
  • Gain in-depth knowledge of the collection, presentation, and stewardship of significant works at SFMOMA.
  • Gain familiarity with SFMOMA’s Media Arts collection and exhibition activities.
  • Learn about the cross-departmental processes involved in the display and long-term care of time-based media works.
  • Connect with colleagues at partner institutions.
  • Experience a wide range of SFMOMA exhibition and public program offerings, including access to research resources from Library & Archives.

  • Complete a holistic collection record (either in form of an object file or MediaWiki entry, for example).
  • Contribute text and research to collection resources.
  • Review curatorial approach to exhibition installations at SFMOMA and other venues with curators and further develop best practices.
  • Present on research project to Team Media and other museum staff.
