Job Description

The Object Research & Writing Associate reports to the Object Research & Writing Director and has primary responsibility for research, writing, and editing on sales narratives for art fairs and information packets on works of art in the gallery’s inventory; compiling provenance and other information from gallery records and published sources; and conducting complex searches using local, national, and international databases, bibliographic utilities, archival, and sales records to catalogue information about an object’s provenance and history and follows standard research and documentation methods. Works closely with the following departments: Communications; Dealer offices; Publications, Exhibitions, Registrars, Art Resources, and Art Fairs teams.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Write/edit texts and research (including comparable works, image requests, and additional history sheet information) for sales packet works as assigned, with a focus on secondary market works.
  • Complete research for incoming artworks as assigned.
  • Work on history sheets and exhibitions as assigned.
  • Cross edit and fact check history sheet, art fair, sales packet, artist bio, and other gallery texts.
  • Assist Object Research & Writing Director and Associate(s) with research requests, long-term database projects, and visiting libraries for research when needed.
  • Ability and interest to take on related research projects and write requests for other departments when needed.
  • Research and document provenance, exhibition history, and literature references for objects in the Gallery’s inventory. Maintain detailed records on provenance research, process, and sources.
  • Follow-up with various sources to update object history.
  • Conduct and compile auction research on objects and filter external research requests
  • Responsible for conducting and verifying research at New York City libraries and institutions.
  • Organize and file both hardcopy and electronic research documentation.
  • Enter compiled research into inventory management database per established protocols.
  • Half-day schedule between Object Research & Writing Director and Associate(s) to filter internal and external object research requests.
  • Continually update Pace history sheet and writing style guides.
  • Additional duties as required.

What You’ll Bring:

  • BA degree in Art History, Fine Arts, Museum Studies, Art Criticism, or other equivalent experience; advanced MA degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated provenance and archival research experience required along with in-depth knowledge of 20th Century and Contemporary Art.
  • Intellectual curiosity, passionate about arts and culture, and exemplary critical thinking, research, writing, and copy-editing abilities.
  • Experience with cataloguing artwork and conducting auction/art market research and comparables.
  • Knowledge of provenance research best practices, such as familiarity with catalogues raisonné and the Art Loss Register.
  • Strategic thinking, strong organizational skills, and ability to multitask, thriving in a fast-paced environment with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity and proficiency with museum, gallery, or library collections management software and Microsoft Office suite, digital scanning applications, Adobe, project management tools.
  • Flexibility and strong follow-through on work assignments.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with staff, interns, outside individuals, and organizations.
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail, and accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team while exhibiting a professional and responsible attitude.
  • Familiarity conducting research in libraries and archives and traveling and researching at off-site New York locations, as needed.
  • 2+ years of comparable experience in similar roles at an auction house, gallery, or museum.
  • Spoken and written fluency in English required. Additional foreign language(s) [French, Italian, German, Spanish, and /or Chinese preferred]
