The Role

The primary function of this role is to assist the Christie’s Art Finance team with managing a diversified, high volume, domestic and international loan portfolio.  This role will also be responsible for basic contract drafting, research tasks, and Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings. The Paralegal must have excellent communication and organizational skills, be a self-starter, take initiative and have the ability and desire to interact with Christie’s clients and outside counsel. This role works closely with the Legal, Operations, Finance, and the Specialist Art Departments to ensure the efficient execution of all loans and expedient client service in this exciting and growing area of the business. The Christie’s Art Finance Paralegal will be based in New York.

Specific duties & responsibilities will include but are not limited to

  • Prepare and revise initial loan documentation, working closely with Legal, Operations, Finance, and Specialist Art Departments
  • Respond to basic loan documentation questions and amendment requests
  • Support the Art Finance team’s day-to-day operational needs, including maintaining transaction folders and coordinating the execution of transaction documents
  • Manage numerous deadlines by prioritizing tasks and delegating as necessary
  • Perform research using various research tools, including the Internet, Westlaw, SEC/EDGAR and other media and financial services sites
  • Organize basic client due diligence materials, including with respect to “know your client” processes and anti-money laundering monitoring and screening programs
  • Assist with UCC filings and comparable international registration systems’ filings, including UCC-1 financing statements, amendments, continuations, and terminations
  • Organize and maintain global contract templates database
  • Process and track legal invoices and manage e-billing systems (such as Legal Tracker)
  • Perform administrative tasks (travel, expenses, calendars) where needed
  • Assist members of the Art Finance team and Legal Department on various projects as needed

The Candidate

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • 2+ years paralegal or legal assistant experience with top tier law firm or in-house legal department, ideally with experience in commercial lending
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including basic contract drafting skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail and strong follow-up skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively across multiple groups and sites
  • Excellent client service and interpersonal skills
  • A passion for the art world, and knowledge or interest in learning auction process
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook
