JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to: Associate Publisher, Production and Circulation
Additional reporting/supporting lines to: Publisher/Editor-in-Chief
Department: Production/Circulation
Location: 1 Honduras Street, London EC1Y 0TH
Period of employment: August 2022- April 2023
Days: 4 days per week
Hours: General office hours are 9.30-6.00 but you may be expected to work outside of these during busy times to meet deadlines
Salary: Depending on experience

ArtReview is a world renowned publisher of contemporary art magazines and has a long standing history of producing quality products with highly regarded editorial. It has been in existence since 1949 and is published 9 times a year. ArtReview Asia was launched in 2013 and is quarterly.

The role of Production Manager is to ensure that magazines and associated print and digital products are produced to a high standard and on time. It’s an important position within the company. 

Key requirements 

The ideal candidate will have worked in a high-pressure environment. Be confident and capable of taking initiative and making decisions. They will possess excellent communication and organisation skills and have a good eye for detail. At least 5 years experience in a print publishing environment is essential, some knowledge of digital production and distribution would be advantageous.

Below are key areas that the position covers:

Print production

You will be responsible for the general build and close of the issues, dealing internally with all departments, and externally with suppliers to ensure that the print magazines and any associated supporting collateral (print marketing) are produced on time and to a high standard.

  • Scheduling – creating, managing and adjusting the schedules for both magazines in accordance with internal feedback. Making sure all parties (internal and external) are aware of the current schedules and advising them of any changes as soon as they are known.
  • Working with the publishers and managing editors with the build and upkeep of the flatplan and advising of preferred/possible pagination splits, positioning adverts when booked.
  • Responding to client queries about schedules and specifications. Keeping a record of new ad bookings, filing these orders
  • Liaising with clients to obtain advertising material on time and to specification. Working with the reproduction house to ensure it meets the correct requirements for printing (obtaining resupplies if not) to eventual sign off.
  • You will manage the flow of Editorial, keeping a record of what stage pages are at, sending pages to reproduction by FTP, collating hard and soft proofing for the edit team, and requesting corrections on page with repro at the latter stages, through to final sign off.
  • Managing the flow of final pages from reproduction to the printers and checking remote proofs.

Digital production

ArtReview and ArtReview Asia have a presence at various digital outlets through which we sell single issues and subscriptions. We also have a website that hosts a mixture of magazine and original content that also carries advertising through Google Ad Manager. Experience with GAM preferred, but training will be provided if not. Duties in this area include:

  • Manage the upload of PDFs for the digital magazines to the various platforms and outlets we use, and scheduling the content to go live on the publication date. 
  • Manage the chasing/scheduling and uploading of online advertising to artreview.com care of Google Ad Manager.
  • Manage the chasing/scheduling and collation of newsletter advertising for our bi-weekly newsletters.

Circulation/Distribution

ArtReview has an international subscriber base and is on sale in newsstands all over the world. We also attend art fairs in various locations. The role has some contributing support in this:

  • Make sure suppliers (distribution – postal/news trade/logistics) are aware of current schedules and advising them of any changes.
  • Liaise with distribution providers and aid the supply information about deliveries for promotional and/or regular mailings.
  • Update the print order and bulk copy sends sheet for each issue.
  • Ensure that any advertiser booked inserts are scheduled for arrival and provide them with specs to ensure compliance and delivery to the correct location.
  • Collate monthly promotional print copy requirements in relation to fairs or other marketing efforts needed to cover the forward production cycle.
  • Assist with the content creation of label carriers to convey specific messages when needed
