The Role

FuturePlan is a programme of capital works that are continually reinventing the V&A, ensuring our buildings and collections are welcoming, accessible and relevant to all. The most innovative contemporary designers are working with and for our audiences to create environments that intrigue, inspire and delight. Ranging in value from £100k to £13m and covering every area of our sites, from galleries to corridors, these projects create a holistic and inspiring experience for all our visitors.

The Projects Department is responsible for developing, managing and delivering these initiatives, working with colleagues across the museum to realise an exciting vision for its future. We are now looking for a Project Manager to join our team on a fixed term basis, to support delivery of the next phase of works. The role will have a focus on the major transformation of one of the Museum’s best-loved galleries. The Project Manager will have a central role in shaping the briefs, appointing a design team and initiating the design process to advance the project.

The Project Manager is responsible for planning and organising all museum activities necessary to drive a project forward. They are responsible for planning, communicating and project managing museum operations. This includes cohesive client-side feedback to Design Teams and managing internal stakeholders to achieve timely decision making. The Project Manager is required to have a good understanding of design process to effectively interface with design and contractor teams.


The role is varied and will involve stakeholder management at all levels, both internal and external, as well as logistics, finance management and planning for operational handover of new spaces.


The Projects team works in a collaborative and agile style, with specific workstreams allocated to members of the team to deliver based on the needs of the project. The Project Manager will be flexible, adaptable and have the capability to support and coordinate multiple workstreams simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Projects to develop, review and clearly communicate the briefs, programme, budget and risks for the project. Lead tender and procurement processes as required.
  • Scope, develop, plan and oversee the successful delivery of projects. This includes identifying the impacts of a construction project on the museum, developing and delivering appropriate solutions for each impact.
  • Be responsible for delivering client-side feedback to the appointed design team, liaising with and managing internal stakeholders to achieve timely and constructive decision making in relation to the project, design, fit-out, installation and move processes.
  • Manage the delivery of build, fit-out, move and operations on time and to budget. Work closely with other members of the Project team, external project management and the external design team to plan and deliver the fit-out works.
  • Identify, schedule and co-ordinate all Museum operations instrumental to the delivery of your workstreams. Scope, lead and deliver any dependent projects and enabling works, including decant, storage and infrastructure works.
  • Ensure that the completed works meet the needs of the museum as defined by the agreed brief. Lead regular working group meetings required to deliver the project.
  • Ensure the efficient and comprehensive handover of a project to the Estate team or other relevant sections on completion. Implement, in consultation with the relevant senior project stakeholders, the appropriate project evaluation processes.
  • Line manage Project Coordinator(s), ensuring regular 1:1s and communications, pastoral and wellbeing care, and performance management.
  • Manage and contribute to the regular project reporting systems, including the workstream reports, financial reports, risk register, Steering Group, FuturePlan Steering Group and Buildings Strategy Committee, as required.
  • Establish communications protocols that secure the support and contributions of internal and external project stakeholders. Ensure that the wider museum is kept well informed of the project’s progress and is consulted as appropriate.
  • Monitor and control all internal V&A costs on the project, in an accurate and responsible manner. Write reports and update Development and funders about the project’s progress as required.
  • Be accountable for the overall success of the projects, either by leading the delivery of the work or delegating this to internal project teams and overseeing its successful progress.
  • Be proactive in managing the conflicting requirements of projects and the wider museum programme of activity and resolving these in a creative and collegiate manner. A balance will need to be achieved to minimise disruption to the museum, while enabling the construction work to take place in the most efficient way possible.
  • Contribute to the success of FuturePlan as a whole, by promoting the work of the department, adding value and expertise to other projects across the organisation, and by representing the Projects Department when appropriate.
  • Promote equality and diversity in all aspects of your work by developing and maintaining positive working relationships, ensuring that colleagues are treated fairly and with respect/dignity and actively contributing to developments that support the museum’s strategy for widening access, inclusion and diversity.


This is a fixed term contract of 36 months.
