Bonhams is looking for a Specialist to join the team based in Paris

About the role

In your role as Specialist you will be required to carry out the following:

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

• Business getting for the department to fulfil the budgets set for the department sales
• Work with the Department Director/ HoD on strategies to encourage new business opportunities for the department
• Maintain and support the ongoing development of a database of customers – both buyers and sellers – for the department
• Maintain and develop contact with collectors to encourage further business with the company, either as buyers or sellers
• Maintain and develop contact with trade contacts to encourage further business with the company
• Liaise with the HoD, and the UK Chinese WOA team, on the production of an advertising and marketing campaign, within the budgets set, to promote the business getting and sales activities of the department
• To satisfactorily complete, as and when required, the valuation of customer’s property both in the office and at other venues within Europe
• Catalogue, research and produce the catalogues to ensure timely delivery to printers
• Assist with photography and preparation of condition reports
• Assist on exhibition events, either in France or worldwide as and when required
• Maintain an awareness of our competitors strategies to maintain the competitive position of this department in the market
• To promote the department through promotional events
• Maintain and support the logistical planning and the stock control

Key skills and attributes
• Knowledge and genuine interest for Chinese Art
• Good market and trend awareness
• Degree holder or equivalent
• A good level of specialist expertise achieved through a previous role
• Proven business acumen and valuation skills
• A network of contacts (or) willingness to build up such a portfolio
• Functional working knowledge of the whole auction process and related procedures (e.g. shipping regulations, VAT)
• Flexible and receptive to change
• Fluent in French and English , Mandarin is a plus
• Excellent time management and organisation skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral
• Able to work as part of team, and independently
• Able to work to tight deadlines and under pressure
• Excellent attention to detail

• La consignation de lots pour les ventes d’arts de chine afin d’atteindre les objectifs fixés au département.
• Le travail en équipe avec le Directeur de département pour développer la clientèle et les opportunités dans cette section tant en France qu’en Europe continentale.
• La gestion de la base de données clientèle, vendeurs et acheteurs pour le département.
• Assurer et developer la relation avec les collectionneurs
• Travailler avec le directeur de département sur les campagnes marketing et communication pour promouvoir les ventes du département .
• Assurer les inventaires dans la spécialité
• Catalogue et fait les recherches sur les oeuvres en respectant les deadlines pour la production des catalogues.
• Assiste aux évènements tant en France qu’à l’étranger.
• Assure la veille concurrentielle sur le marché pour ce département.

Required Skills

• Connaissances du marché de l’art et du domaine des arts de Chine en France et en Europe.
• Formation académique en histoire de l’art, dans le domaine des arts de Chine.
• Une première expérience réussie dans l’expertise des arts de Chine.
• Un carnet de clients permettant de donner rapidement une visibilité de la spécialité en France.
• Des qualités d’expertise et de business getting.
• Résistance au stress et capacité à travailler avec des deadlines de ventes.
• Un esprit entrepreneurial, une capacité à travailler en équipe en France et à l’international
• Bilingue anglaise et français, la maitrise du chinois est considérée comme un plus.
• Rigueur et organisation
