Working as a Specialist in the Latin American Art Department in New York this person will play a key role in driving new business development, bringing in consignments for sale and cultivating buyers to meet sales and profit targets.


  • Primary responsibility for sourcing Latin American Art consignments across all sales within the Modern and Contemporary Art Departments – Evening, Day, Curated and Online sales
  • Developing proprietary client relationships and supporting larger client teams.  Actively managing client relationships in order to enhance client loyalty and generate business; supporting key client activity in particular focusing on generating new networks of clients/collectors to Sotheby’s and promoting business opportunities across all sales channels i.e. auction, online and private sales
  • Supporting the appraisal and valuation needs of the department.  Evaluating client’s property at Sotheby’s and at client locations, including leading (and participation in) full valuation projects
  • Acting as a conduit and lead expert between the Latin and Contemporary and Modern Departments to set the sale strategy for Latin American works to be included in the Contemporary and Modern sales.  Collaborate with colleagues within the Contemporary and Modern Departments to help position and sell these works
  • Working with all Latin American Art specialists to sell the sale by helping clients at the exhibition; speaking to clients about the property; develop, track and communicate client interest in lots; and execute bids at sale
  • Travel domestically & internationally when needed to cultivate client relationships outside the tri-state
  • Conduct private treaty deals to grow the Latin American private sales business.
  • Apply creativity, innovative thinking and resourcefulness to find new opportunities that will increase transactions on both consignment and selling side of the business.
  • Coordinate and oversee proposal development where appropriate.
  • Contribute to pre-sale duties, including catalogue research, cataloguing, proof-reading, color-proofing and exhibition set-up as needed.
  • Participating in the Latin American Art community within New York – attendance at social and art world events e.g. gallery and museum openings; increasing the network of contacts and relationships within this market. 


  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of related business experience; auction and/or gallery experience highly preferred
  • Broad knowledge of, exposure to, and network with Latin American art collectors and dealers
  • Proven track record of translating relationships into consignments and sales
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate passionately and persuasively
  • Energetic self-starter and independent worker that can thrive in a fast-pace, deadline-driven environment
  • Team player who can collaborate productively and contribute to a common goal
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to see projects through from start to finish
  • Demonstrates good judgment, discretion and professionalism at all times
  • Foreign languages a plus, particularly Spanish
