Experienced Unity Developer & Designer
Studio Olafur Eliasson
Post Date: 22 Feb 2023

Beginning of the contract: April 2023
Employment: Full-time (35 – 40 hours/week)
Where: Berlin, or flexible
Deadline: 15th March 2023

Job Description:

As a Unity Developer & Designer at Studio Olafur Eliasson (SOE), you will join a team focused on the research and development of artworks realised using virtual and augmented reality. Your work will focus on technical and creative development of spatial prototypes and experiments in both VR and AR, developed in Unity, to be experienced on the Quest Pro (or similar hardware). The prototyping process will involve practice-based research and experimentation, via a highly iterative and open-ended design process. Your work will be hosted within SOE, and will collaborate closely with outside partners for the realisation of final artworks.

Your work will be part of a small team, focused on spatial experiments made possible through rapidly developing mixed reality technologies. The team’s practice-based research approach will lead to the development of new immersive works, that are a response to and contribution to the realm of embodied experience in virtual and physical space.

Your tasks will include conducting foundational conceptual research (prior to development in Unity), realising fast paced Unity based prototypes in both VR and AR following the artistic direction of Olafur Eliasson, preparing regular internal and external presentations, staying up-to-date on current technical possibilities within the field, and collaborating with external expert partners and advisors. Your work will include the translation and synthesis of artistic experiments into realisable digital projects, able to be delivered within set schedules and development budgets.

You will work both independently and under the direction of the team leader, and under the artistic direction of Olafur Eliasson. Specific research projects will require collaborating across SOE with our various design and research teams. We are looking for an independent and collaborative designer and developer, who is highly motivated and committed to their work, open to explore established artistic trajectories, and curious to acquire new knowledge, skills and abilities.

Your work may be hosted within our Berlin studio, or abroad. In both cases, regular in person meeting with artist Olafur Eliasson will be required, approximately every quarter.  If working outside of Berlin, flexibility in travel schedules is required.

Your Skills:

  • Extensive experience and technical proficiency working as a Unity or Unity3D Developer (3+ years of experience required)
  • Excellent design skills and sensitivity for aesthetics and spatial thinking
  • Comfortable and motivated to work within an iterative artistic design process
  • Collaborative and open to working creatively within a group
  • Knowledgeable of contemporary art, with a focus on digital art
  • Ability to think analytically and conceptually
  • An experienced design-based researcher, who is able to visual and verbal synthesis research findings, and able to incorporate research into future projects
  • Ability to work with a high level of geometric precision and aesthetic accuracy
  • Strong eye for technical feasibility and excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to research and learn about new technical capabilities within Unity, and other software
  • Ability to interface with 3D modelling tools (primarily Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper) in the research and design process
  • Confident working in Adobe Programs, including: Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
  • Skilled and patient trouble shooter
  • Strong communication and organization skills, working well both in-person and remotely
  • Strong organisation and time management skills, able to independently structure your time and meet deadlines

  • Experience working in digital art production
  • Experience in dance, or other body-based forms of expression
  • Professional degree in art, architecture, computer science, industrial design, product design, or similar field is preferred
