Kenny Schachter on How to Kill It in The Art World
Sorry art critics, it seems there is no way to get rich
Art Stuff 03 Apr 2020

Who does’t know Kenny Schachter: art-dealer, enthusiastic collector & razor-sharp observing art critic (thank god for his column on Artnet and his IG posts), now also lectures at New York’s School of Visual Art. We spoke with him to share with us some of his most priceless words of advice :

On current trends: Current trends are black and female artists that are making up for years of prejudice and racism in art and society.

On what to collect:  If you aren’t experienced to know yourself, I suggest buying what you care about but only after someone you trust (and there aren’t many in today’s art world!) puts a selection in front of you. Art is a slow burning process that takes a lifetime to learn but that is the fun and beauty of it.

On how to to collect art on a shoestring: You can find it on Instagram or an art school for under $1,000 easily, sometimes much less. Or just buy prints and drawings, they are cheap and a great way to experience art

On how to become a good art dealer: A good art dealer is patient, selfless, can put the interests of the artist before themselves and is obviously also a good salespersonwhich I most definitely am not!

On how to be an art-criminal: Buy a Picasso with black money and stick it on your private plane or in a tax free storage facility (e.g. Freeport) then sell it on at a later date. Open a private museum in the USA and, as a US taxpayer, your art and all the associative costs become tax deductible. FYI...I am an artist, writer, teacher, curator and collector not a criminal advisor!

On how to make money as an art-critic: You can’t!

On how to make money as a curator:  Nope, you can’t either.

On how to make money as an artist:  Work, work, work and have something to say.

-Be good and be prepared to sacrifice your life, family and happiness..

-Do anything but work, work work.

-Spend your time finding out exactly what your passion is, and pursue it till you die.

-Never compromise or capitulate.

-Everyday there is something to learn, read and see as much as humanly possible and then share what you gathered. It’s only fair.

-Galleries, auction houses, artists studios…as Malcolm X said: “by any means necessary” and as the Nike ad said “just do it”.

-Don’t let anything or anyone get in the way.
