Ever Heard About Couture Crochet?
An Aristocratic punk paints with a needle...
Fempire 18 Sep 2018

Fashion designer, Berlin

Lou de Bètoly is a french designer who works and lives in Berlin and you could say that she paints with her needle.

In her collections, nothing is short of fantastical and the fabrics and textures are beautifully random, light and magical.

Her main inspirational sources are chaos, surrealism, nostalgia, decadence, extravagance and oneirism. Having worked for Jean Paul Gaultier, she got a couture twist for her – until then – arty crafts.

In a consequently distinctive way she works a detailed craftmanship and embelishment techniques in a modern context.

De Bètoly’s delicate and time-consuming craftsmanship is far from a fast-fashion manner. “I am really passionate about survival of handicraft because we are going so fast. Nowadays, everything is mass produced. It is a challenge to find places where the handwork is still existing.” Making every piece on her own, she admits that the final product isn’t always perfect, but that is the point. And that’s the art.
