Norman Norell brought arty couture to the MET in the 50s
New York designer Norman Norell's claim

01Norell's claim_theartgorgeous

New York designer Norman Norell’s claim to fame is designing costumes for Hollywood film stars Marilyn Monroe, Joan Crawford and Judy Garland—later on, Demi Moore and Michelle Obama brought back his glamor in throwbacks. From the designer who used to host runway shows at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he is having a retrospective at the Fashion Institute of Technology opening February 9. “Norell: Dean of American Fashion” shows 100 of his best ensembles, which spans film theatre and fashion. While his famed sequin mermaid gowns were his trademark, trace his work for Paramount Pictures in the 1920sto his own label in 1960. With his instantly-recognizable, signature outfits Dinah Shore and Jacqueline Kennedy wore throughout his five-decade-long career, his shows were frequently photographed by Bill Cunningham while stars like Carol Channing sat front row. No wonder Norell has been called “The American Balenciaga.”
