Director, New York City

Going to graduate from the MA at NYU, Hongxiao Wei is a already a budding art professional with working experiences in artnet and Christie’s. Influenced by her Chinese contemporary artist-father, Wei Ligang, her passion for art has brought her to museums, fairs, biennales around the world. Her footprints in art are closely tracked by 24.2k followers on Instagram. Let’s see her tips on how to gorgeously rock the art scenes from New York to Beijing.

In the art world currently I find most exciting that…
The art market moves East, especially for Chinese art market, which is booming in recent years. You can see more and more mega-galleries are trying to expand to Asia, and Chinese collectors and artists frequently appear on the global art stage.

Number of unanswered mails in your account today…
22.

My perfect working outfit…
Always with a pair of high-heels.

My favourite new brand discovery…
Jimmy Choo. Heels are so important… any girls in the art would know what I mean. We have to walk all the time… spending the whole day in the Met or MoMA, and construction in Chelsea nowadays have made gallery hopping/walking particularly challenging for us, but we still have to go to openings, galas and parties at night… We can’t wear sneakers, we have to be ready for socializing, talking to collectors and dealers… and, of course Instagram posts and tags because nowadays Instagram rules the art world… this is just a fact. Then you will realize how special a pair of Jimmy Choo is— “she” keeps you companied and stand out from the crowd, yet without making your feet suffer, unlike some other brands…

My everyday online art read is…
artnetnews.com; I kinda have to since I work for them (laugh). I really enjoy this job as it leverages my art knowledge and language skills and ever-growing curiosity for the art world.

Your necessary extravagance is…
Collecting artworks.

Most ridiculous thing I ever bought…
I spent $500 on a normal basic-level hair-curler in Zurich. I was badly in need because I broke my previous one by plugging into a socket of different voltage in Kassel when I visited the Documenta14 in Germany.

My ultimate secret after long working hours…
Listening to classic music (while trying out all different snacks available in the library vending machine…)

Favourite collaboration of the art- and fashion world…
Ah-hah I love this question—I believe fashion will always be part of art, and hence both art and fashion will always be related.
No art and fashion collaboration list would be complete without mentioning Piet Mondrian and Yves Saint Laurent. The iconic A-line shift ‘Mondrian Dress’ was released during the Autumn season of 1965. Fused with graphic black lines, white spaces and primary colors, the Mondrian-inspired dress was an iconic piece during the 60s.
The knee-length wool or jersey shift dress was featured on the cover of French Vogue in September 1965 and since then, many copies have been made and reproduced.
This will be remembered as a classic in both art and fashion history book.

My favourite hashtag…
#art #artist #museum #gallery

On my office table I always have…
My laptop, the ONLY thing I do during work is WORK haha.

The most arty city is…
Paris.

Art world gent I would like to have lunch with…
Brice Marden. In 2005, my father visited his studio under ACC’s (Asian Cultural Council) arrangement during his New York study tour, which was funded by Rockefeller Fellowship Award. They both share a very similar set of features—the study of (painting) lines is the major subject of their artworks. I really appreciate Marden’s profound awareness and understanding of Chinese calligraphy, Taoist philosophy and painting lines.

Who are the best dressed in the art world…
Bill Cunningham, a candid street photographer, always has one blue jacket on him. “Bill Cunningham blue“ is created specially for him. I’m curious how many blue jackets in total that he has ever had.
