If you’re shopping in New York, just in time for the holidays, one must-see is the new redesign of Chanel’s 57th Street flagship store in New York on Thursday, masterminded by Peter Marino.
What’s the showstopper here is not the handbags, but the art.
A 60-foot-tall sculpture of a pearl necklace by the French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel is on view, stealing the spotlight. IT’s inspired by Coco Chanel’s own pearls, which she wore to runway shows, at home and in the design studio.
Chanel was an art collector who owns works by Robert Mapplethorpe, Olafur Eliasson and Jenny Holzer, so this new piece is not out of the ordinary. It is a reminder of one of Chanel’s own quotes on art and style, when she said: “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”
