What Peggy Guggenheim’s Birthday Means to Art Girls Everywhere
A liberated woman long before there was a name for it

Happy birthday Peggy Guggenheim! Her birthday is August 26 and her namesake Guggenheim museum in Venice (where she is buried alongside her dogs and her daughter) will host a concerto for museum members. But for the rest of us, here’s some food for thought: She represents a heiress who went against the grain, against the housewife stereotype (she was born in the late 1800s, remember) to carve her own path and collect modern art in a time when it wasn’t widely accepted. In fact, many of the artists she collected were considered degenerates, underdogs or no-names like Marcel Duchamp and Alexander Calder, a far different cry from what they represent today. She created a path where there was none before and it was only decades later when she got recognition, long after she bought a Venetian palazzo and turned it into her home, then, museum. Here’s why we love her. As she once said herself: “I look back on my life with great joy. I think it was a very successful life. I always did what I wanted and never cared what anyone thought. Women’s lib? I was a liberated woman long before there was a name for it.”
